Um...The Lion King Rip-Off??

I felt like I was watching a low-budget version of The Lion King. I mean, some lines were directly taken from The Lion King -- "Well I'll be a monkey's uncle"; "The water hole is dry!". There was even a "bad" lion with those same green, jealous eyes. A lot of the same imagery, only not as beautiful. Bugged me the entire movie.

thank you!!

Last time I checked, the "Monkey's uncle" phrase can be used in any movie without being accused of copying something. The Lion King wasn't the only movie to come up with that line. The evil lion has green eyes because green eyes look sinister. Diego, from Ice Age, had green eyes. Is he copying from the Lion King as well? No, green is just a sinister looking eye color.

reply

Those were examples. The movie was a rip.

Playing the ripoff card again? *facepalm*

lol alec baldwins lion was just missing the scar

reply

There were similarities, but if you want to see a real rip-off of the Lion King, go watch THE WILD. It's like they tried to blend Madagascar and The Lion King. Some scenes are copied straight from the Lion King.

reply

I find this all amusing since the Lion King itself ripped off another...

I haven't seen the MadagascarE2A but it sounds like a parody. However, trevormalda, the page you posted is from an angry kimba fan. If, according to that page, lion king ripped-off Kimba, then Shrek is a rip-off of Beauty and the Beast.

or you know.... Hamlet.

reply

actually it was Madagascar 1 which ripped The Wild. Dreamworks stole the idea from disney when The Wild was in production, and the dreamwork guys worked faster and got their film released. That's why it made The Wild look like a rip-off.

This.

Not to mention it referenced tons of other movies as well. So I guess it was a total rip off of those too? :|

reply

*oh brother* I was just saying I could do the same thin he did and make Shrek look like a "rip-off" of BatB. The Kimba guy is a complete liar if you research the information yourself.

Actually, Shrek only featured fairy tale "creatures" as a joke, but none of the plot came from any of them. They were just cameos. Other than the plot, scenes and characters are relatively similar in BatB and Shrek.

For example: Characters

The main male protagonist is monster-like (Mix animal-like beast) - (Ogre)

The female protagonist is/or will be a princess (Belle)(Fiona)

Annoying sidekick (Lefou-villian sidekick)(Donkey-Hero sidekick)

Both villians wear red, have a spoiled personality and courts female character
(Gaston) (Farquad)

Scenes:

(Beast battles wolves to save Belle) (Fiona battles Merry Men to save Shrek)

(Beast get's scratched but resists help) (The whole "Theres an arrow in your butt thing" and Shrek resists help)

(Both have a transformation in the end and have the same camera angles)

I hope someone get's my real point. I'm not saying Shrek is a ripoff, I would also like to point out that Kimba was inspired by Disney's Bambi, the base for "The Lion King"

One last note: I wouldn't depend on a fansite for information, the page is biased.

And plus, the fairy tale characters are in the public domain.

reply

Parody is not a genre.

As stated previously, The Lion King is essentially a combining of Kimba The White Lion and Hamlet.

reply

Thank you...

why are people so stupid about this? yes, it has striking similarities to Lion King. No, it's not a rip off of lion king.

if you're treating itlike that, then you might as well say its a rip off of airplane, west side story, etc, etc because of all the allusions...oh wait, some of you guys probably dontknow what an allusion is...

reply

It is a rip-off...

If they were trying to make a parody don't you think they would have tried to do it a little more blatantly?? Get over it guys! A parody satirizes what its a parody of. This in no way does that.

Why go so outta your way to defend this? Even without the Lion King theme the movie wasn't very good. Typical sequel trying to apply a "more is more" principle and that rarely works.

It had many other movie allousions but the Lion King theme overshadowed them all and was one of the main themes. What other movie allusion could you say played a part equal to that?

Erikpizana: If you call people who calls this a Lion King rip-off stupid then take a look at yourself. You like this dumb movie. I'm not calling people who like it stupid - but if we are stupid for making this statement then surely you are no Einstein yourselves

reply

I think it's obvious they were attempting to satirize the whole Lion King thing with this, it's supposed to be blatant.

If you create a thread titled, "He/she looks like..." you are officially disturbed.

reply

It's called a parody. It's not ripping off anything. If you watch the movie you'll notice (if you have any brain at all) that the movie spoofs many shows, games and movies. Lion King, Planet of the Apes, Airplane, Twilight Zone, pretty much any Disney movie with a self loving villain having great hair, Monkeys in a Barrel, Where's Waldo, West Side Story, Flight of the Phoenix...

And then we can't forget that the film actually takes jabs at society and government... We had the whole thing about invading another land and forcing his ideology on them even if they don't want it.. You had the whole issue with the homosexual monkeys wanting more rights.. You had the reflection of the "all blacks look the same" stereotype (the Zebra's all looking the same and being voiced by the same black guy).. you had chubby chasers.. reflection of people turning to ridiculous religious views during desperate times.. And sooo much more.

The movie is a PARODY. Not a ripoff.

why are the IMDB message boards infested with ignorant fvcks who know nothing about the art of film making, or are scared of the challenge of new ideas and discussing personal interpretations?

i mean, seriously, wtf?

I also thought it was similar to lion king.

why?

-Good lion leader king
-Bad wanabee king
-Good king thought son got killed in both films
-son leaves and returns to be king

reply

Oh lordie this is kinda ridiculous. If madagascar is a rip off of lion king then lion king is a rip off of hamlet. Madagascar does a lot of parody. Chill, its not a rip off.

reply

it's called a parody you ass!
are you really that full of yourself?!

Was that directed towards me? I'm sorry, but I just wanted to make a point that two films can have simultaneities if based on similar grounds. Which is really what happened with the whole Kimba/Lion King controversy.

Yeah this goes to prove that NOBODY can watch a movie without having a bitch or a whinge about something in it.

Just hush and watch the movie for what it is........a movie.

(This isn't directed at anyone in particular. Just the whole thread)

This movie was made to make u laugh!!! The movie is computer-generated so technically can not be compared with the Lion King. I don't think 80 million is low-budget.

reply

Um. I LOVE the Lion King, and I have to ask...When does that movie say "The water hole is dry"?! I have watched Lion King a MILLION times, and do NOT remember that line at all...I'm not disputing that there are similarities to Lion King in here, but it's not a rip-off! And even if it was, it would only be a rip-off of a rip-off!!! Kimba the White Lion cam first, and NO ONE remembers THAT!!! It stars a lion cub whose father dies, and now there's a rival lion of the same coloration as Scar, who even HAS the same scar! I mean, Kimba/Simba? THEIR NAMES ARE THE SAME!!! If anything, Lion King is the rip-off, NOT Madagascar! Besides, Simba's dad doesn't live, he is never captured, and his father never hates him for his passions! The only remote similarity I see is that the rival male doesn't know how to rule his kingdom properly, but he doesn't CAUSE the problem, so it kinda doesn't count...As for the Monkey's Uncle line, that is used in multiple films, MANY villains have green eyes, especially in animated films, and so on! I can find ALOT more differences between this movie and Lion King. It DOES SEEM however, that this movie MAY be taking a little bit from Happy Feet...but that's it.

Whoa whoa whoa, calm down. First Claw(Kimba villian) doesn't have a scar. He's blind in one eye. Simba is the Swahili word for lion in which it is used as the main characters names.(Except for Alex of course). The connections between Lion King and Kimba are the same amount as Madagascar 2 and Lion King.
