why does jacob speak in third person?

opinions anyone? i realize there's probably a psychological reason and that most of us here aren't professionals, but just wondered if anyone had an educated guess....i'm really curious.....

i thought the boy who played jacob did a fantastic job, as did the other children in the movie. how sad that anyone would harm a child.

reply

it's a coping mechanism for many abused children. it's something i did. by saying that the abuse happened to 'jacob' he was able to make himself feel like it happened to someone else. when he started saying 'i' and 'me' that was the first sign that he was coming to terms with it and would be stronger and most importantly he would be okay.

i see....thanks for the info.

I also thought it was a self-esteem issue. You know, his parents were saying he was useless and worthless and stuff, so he talked about himself in the third person. As he grew to love himself, he begin using "I" statements. Ex. to Bessy the cow, "I love you.".

Catch ya on the flip side.

in the movie 'Mermaid' the little girl in it (Jodelle Ferland) refered to herself in the third person for most of it beacuse her father had died, the reason in the movie for it was also what someone said above about putting herself outside of it

jnpborninusa: they were responding to someone's message - someone w/ the screen name of "Scy1990" - that has since been deleted (notice the "post deleted" line) that I think said something like...he was a freak, no wonder he got abused...I have a feeling the person just said that to be obnoxious and to get a reaction, but it's still a sick thing to say

I agree with Crossmel....It was a coping mechanism for Jacob to speak of himself in the third person.

yeah, what they said makes a lot of sense. so he could feel like he was outside his self.

Matthew Knight did an amazing job as Jacob. he's really an amazing actor.

i could be wrong, but i thought the original son that they killed was named jacob.. i kind of figured that the older kid was jacob, the day killed him, so they passed off the little kid as jacob and moved away. that was why he talked in third person, he was also talking about his brother. did anyone else think that?

reply

I believe Jacob speaks in a third person because its his way of coping with what happened to him. His own escape from what happened to him. His survival means. If he refers to it as a third person, its not him that it happened to. But of course that last just so long because the human mind soon breaks down.
