When does this take place (the part with jacob)? Other movies like this?

The movie was released in 2006 and at the end Jacob was ready for college (so he was probably about 18 at the end) and had come back to the Childhelp village to say hi. He was 9 for most of the movie, so did that mean the core events of the movie with Jacob, Michael and Laura supposedly took place around 1997?

Also, I saw this on youtube one night when bored because John Pyper Ferguson is in it. The end scene with Jacob, when Jacob is telling Richard about "the baby in the ground" was an amazing bit of acting. I loved when how Richard was watching Jacob carefully, both concerned and empathic, without over-acting, and finally told Jacob over and over that he was "good".

I want to help abused children eventually, and have seen other movies dealing with the horrors of child abuse, but they are either unrealistic (like Radio Flyer) or ultimately depressing (Song for a Raggy Boy). Has anyone else seen any other movies like "For the love of a Child?" Thanks.

ANd John Pyper Ferguson REALLY should do more dramatic roles, he is GREAT!

1959, support from US troops based in Asia and later from the Sates enables two actresses to start a charity for mixed-race 'orphans' who are locally neglected as outcasts. Thus originates Childhelp, which later runs multi-disciplinary centers for abused and/or neglected children in the States. Among them is bright Jacob Fletcher, whose stepfather, a lawyer, terrorized him into utter trauma and reclaims him shortly after 10 months in jail. Jacob's peers have distressing stories of their own, but competent, devoted staff helps most of them decisively on the former farm, using animal therapy.

It was much earlier than the 90's.

I realize this is two years old almost, but I thought I'd post any way.

There's a movie called Martian Child with John Cusack who is adopting a little boy who thinks he's a Martian. It's a great movie that deals with abandonment issues in foster kids. If you like the scene where Jacob is burying the baby, I think you'll enjoy the scene at the end of this movie as well.
