Ms. Lovett?

Besides being a skank, what did she die from... a STD?

In this movie she died because he slit her throat...

I may be bad... but I feel gooood.

Oh I now that part... but what was on her face?

reply

Oh that, yes she caught it from having sex with someone with the chicken pox I think...It doesnt look like the chicken pox to me but i believe thats what they call it in the movie

I may be bad... but I feel gooood.

Really? I just thought it was an STD

It was small pox, rather than chicken pox. It was a major killer back then, but virtually eradicated now.

She had recovered from it, but still had the scars.

Mrs. Lovett did not have smallpox, but rather syphilis, which was called the French pox. This is why she asks, "When will the madness come?"

Ah, okay, that would make sense. I remember hearing "pox" mentioned, and assumed it was smallpox, but an STD like syphilis makes a lot more sense.

Yes, you guessed correctly about an STD.

You're still wrong, he slit her throat. Watch the movie.

reply

The "pox" didn't mean chicken pox, it meant STDs that give you sores. Could have been herpes, syphillis, something like that, but she would have recovered from chicken pox.

One of the previous posters was correct in saying that "The French Pox" is another name for the dreaded Syphilis. Why they called it French is because of a notorious outbreak of it in the French army in the late 1400's. In some parts of Europe it was also called The Spanish Pox.

What bothers me is that her pie shop had good business even after she got all the scars. I don't think that I will eat her pies due to the fear of the same disease. But that didn't bother her customers. And she was nice to the poors at the beginning of the movie then killed for a valuable necklace, what a contradictory.
