On yahoo(usa) today, there was an article about this movie stating that there were riots in india for the movie's tickets. apparently, this is the most expensive indian movie ever made. also, it said that rajnikanth is the most famous actor in india, even more than amitabh bachchan. if that's really true, i'm surprised, since i have never heard of rajnikath before. so what's the deal?

Answer is, his fans are crazy for his films and keep watching them again and again. If you understand this logic you will understand why he is making a lot of money. Tamils are film crazy.
However, still if we look at ALL-INDIA fame, he will be nowhere close to Bachchan. Amitabh was the highest paid indian actor from 1975-1992, He was a phenomenon, you only had to look at the way people prayed for him in 1982 all over the country. From the late90s onwards he stopped playing the HERO, and accepted father roles. Thus his craze came down. Rajnikanth still plays the hero and his tamil fans still somehow accept him as a hero.
Even Rajnikanth said, If im the king, then Amitabh is the emperor, Please dont compare me to him.

thanks for your answer. I know amitabh is big in india, but i somehow always thought shahrukh was the biggest in india. i realize worldwide, shahrukh is bigger than amitabh and rajnikanth, but in india, amitabh is at the top, followed by rajnikanth i guess.
shareshah rukh isn't the biggest in india. most of srk's movies are multi-starrers usually starring amitabh. his individual star appeal can be seen from movies such as Asoka and Swades. they bombed.

He was thought to be popular only in the southern part of India. But his latest film has been a hit in other parts of India too.
He is also quite popular in Japan and Taiwan, besides wherever there is a significant Tamil Population like in Singapore and Malaysia.
rajanikanth is a super hero of one of the regional language films in india. i would say he is not a good actor (if i say loudly the tamil people may kill me) but they like his special body language. they call him as "style mannan" means king of styles. many of his characters are helping the poor people, fighting against crimes etc. but once again i am saying he is not at all a good actor.
