Recommendations for other canadian movies?

Ok, I am Canadian first of all, and I hardly ever see Canadian films but I would love to check out more, any suggestions?

If I said I love you right now, will you hold it against me?

I have come to the realisation that if you want to see a good Canadian film that pronounces itself as such you need to watch French Canadian films because they seem to be the only ones who put good effort into the film's production, Les Invasion Barbares is the best one I've seen recently that comes to mind, but there are more obscure "odd" films done by English Canadians like Cronenberg and Egoyan that you could see too. Although I think I like the French films better because the plots are formulaic (groan, I know) but they aren't so weird and kooky that I lose interest.

You'd be surprised but Canada does do a lot of independent film production of good pictures its just that they do it in collaboration with France or Belgium or England and never get much of the credit...not to mention that the film usually doesn't take place in Canada so its hard to consider it a "Canadian" film. Of course I'm basing a lot of my anti-anglo-Canadian sentiment on the crap they show on TMN that has no good plot lines and poor production value but I wish Anglo-Canadian's would take more pride like the Quebeckers have in making films about our country.

To tack on to my original post...I saw a really good French Canadian film at this year's TIFF. It was called A No Hit No Run Summer in English, French title was Un Ete Sans Point Ni Coup Sur. It was by far the best movie I've seen at the festival in the 5 years I've been going, I really recommend it.

I have to agree with Les Invasions Barbares. Recently saw this movie with my husband and we were very impressed by the depth and intelligence of it. A very deep, very touching, very interesting movie. All those awards and nominations were well deserved!

Even so, as good as the movie was, surprisingly, the best part is in the special features, where all the characters are reunited for a long, relaxed, and conversationally rich dinner. What a great idea! So much better and more rewarding than interviewing a couple of the main characters and maybe the director, sitting rigidly in an armchair, with a microphone shoved in their face, nodding mechanically, and answering a few questions by rote. This informal and congenial setting (not to mention the fine food and the wine) really brought out the true personalities and genuine thoughts of all the actors. And they were very insightful and intelligent in their comments and observations about life, death, the movie itself and their respective roles in it. This special feature was about as long as the movie itself and every bit as engaging, if not more so. Recommend it highly! Rated 7.8/10 on IMDB. I give it an 8.5

C.R.A.Z.Y. is one you might like.

C.R.A.Z.Y. is an excellent movie. There is also "Jesus de Montreal".

C.R.A.Z.Y. and HCL are both great choices. I'd suggest "Perfectly Normal" although I don't know that it's out on DVD. If it happens to be on the tube, catch it.

I was so surprised when I picked up Everything is Going Green. I had never even heard of it, but I really enjoyed it. Set in Vancouver, it's light and funny with a heart-warming romance subplot. The writing is clever, there are fun secondary characters. You'll enjoy it.

There are so many great Canadian films. Try any of these:

Away From Her
Snow Cake
Hard Core Logo
Calendar
The Sweet Hereafter
Videodrome
Fire, Earth, and Water (Deepa Mehta's India trilogy)
Black Robe
Life Classes
FUBAR
The Snow Walker
Le declin to l'empire americain
Goin' Down the Road
Nobody Waved Goodbye
Emporte moi

...so many good films, so little space to list them all.

How about Strange Brew, you hoser?

Loved "La grande séduction" aka "Seducing Dr. Lewis." Thought the movie was really funny, kind of like the Irish "Waking Ned Devine," if you've seen that one.
