Albertan with a question.

I went to French Immersion here in the Rebublic of Alberta and I still use my French skills daily. I work on a construction site with over 6000 workers, and about 1/4 are fom PQ or New Brunswick. It's great because I keep my skills up this way as I am the Safety Trainer for the project and I see them daily. Here's my question: what the %$^& does osti de coliss de tabarnak actually mean? I know it's the mammerjammer of all swears, but what is the literal/spiritual translation? Coliss is an expressio of grief, but what the heck is it?

BTW....I loved the movie. Purely Canadian.

The Québec society used to be a really really strict and rigid catholic one. The way our ancestors cope with (and eventually got rid of) it was using religious words as swearing.

litterally here are their meanings:

crisse (Christ) - "Christ"
câlice (calice) - "chalice"
ostie (hostie) - "host"
ciboire - "ciborium" or "pyx", the receptacle in which the host is stored
tabarnac (tabernacle) - "tabernacle"
calvaire - "Calvary"
viarge (vierge) - "the Virgin Mary"
baptême - "baptism"
ciarge (cierge) - "votive or Paschal candle"
maudit - "damn"
Mozusse (Moïse)- "Moses"

really cool wikipedia article on that there:

Republic of Alberta?

reply

try......A province

reply

Uhh....guys? He was kibbitzing. In case you've never noticed, there's a certain smallish contingent of the Alberta population that would like to take a page from the PQ playbook.

Hence "Republic of Alberta"

reply

Haha, another one of those! Though Alberta would actually survive as their own "republic". Would still look funny as it is landlocked and all.

reply

Yeah...landlocked just like those countries in Europe...

Ever wonder where the money Ottawa gets comes from? It isn't from the East.

Even Anne Frank could see that...

reply

Hehe, well I actually live in Ottawa and I love to mooch off people so it's actually nice! Yeah, and Alberta separating makes much more sense than Québec separating, economically. One funny way someone predicted the future was that Alberta was to join to the USA and be called "Jesusland". It looks like Westjet's success is going with the oil boom in Alberta. Oh well, I don't think I'm ever going to get out of Ontario anyways, or at least Eastern Canada, I love it way too much here.

reply

Ottawa's a beautiful city....too bad we keep the politicians there. Maybe we can move them to Windsor.

Even Anne Frank could see that...

Can safely being said that money comes from Toronto. You see, oil don't worth much, if no one want to buy it. And if someone is buying it, it is to use it to make something that they are selling back, with more profit. No oil from Alberta, well, nice, they would buy it, at a higher price, from someone else, but they will then sell what they make accordingly, also at a higher price.

Sure, sure, some of any national income, of any nation, come from natural ressources, but take example on Japan with almost no natural ressources...

Much more of the money comes from manufacturing, and even much more from Banks (and services). It is simple economy 101.

reply

LOL...then why is Ottawa sking for our frigging oil revenue? I'm sure our trillions of barrels of crude is minor compared to Ontario's bank wealth. Toronto can go to hell and keep her money as well. My cash comes from the West.

Even Anne Frank could see that...

reply

Why? because people with a lot of money are not those who generated that money in the first place. "They" want yours, and mine, because they simply can get it.

You don't get really rich by your pair of arms, but with 4000 pairs of arms working for you. Natural resources do not create a lot of jobs (ex.: most of third world countries where economy is only based on natural resources), but banks, in the end, do. Again, take example with Japan, almost without any natural resources other than working people.

Sorry to blow your bubble, or to destroy your 'model', but ... The job we do, the communauty we contribute to built, that defines human quality, but oil under our feet? Is that your main source of being 'proud' of your country?

reply

Natural resources don't create jobs? My job has nothing to do with oil, but oil pays me. Same as the other 385 000 people who serve this area. I measure nothing by the oil under my feet. We're wealthy in Alberta because we work. As for your bank theory, do you really think the banks are Canadian? I know for a fact BMO isn't and it's bank number 1 in Canada. I can guarantee you the company I work for is ours. All 3000 shareholders are in Alberta.

Even Anne Frank could see that...

I'm an Albertan, too. Lifelong Albertan. I'm one of those Albertans who actually acknowledges that people outside of Alberta work for a living.

I avoid rodeos, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, and hockey like I avoid the plague.

Life doesn't revolve around oil.

Just saying.

Oh yes, there are plenty of Albertans who would like to separate from Canada. I'm one of those who says that we are a part of Canada, and that's that.

I'm a lifelong Albertan and I don't watch hockey. I don't consider biking to be a left-wing activity (politically), either.
