Why 7.3?

Okay now tell me, why does this movie has 7.3!!?? It was not so good. Okay, I admit that it wasn't bad at all, but come on, why did you like it?

-Because It's Quebecois and makes fun of Ontario or vice-versa?
-Because It's Quebecois and had a lot of action
-Because Patrick Huard is sexy?

Everyone is like: ho man what a great movie, but think about it, the story isn't that good, if it was an americain movie it would be hated to death.

Plus, the bad guy is nothing, I personally like these kind of movies where you have to find who the bad guy is, but in this movie.... WHO IS IT!?! He's nothin', he's just a bad guy. I don't know if the bad guy was in fact... Martin Ward's sister...

Was it the best film of all time? No. Was it enjoyable? Yeah, pretty much so, a decent popcorner. Did it have shortcomings? Sure. But so what?

It's making fun of the stereotypes we have of each other. The lead characters compliment each other's shortcomings.

What's your example of a 7.3 movie?

reply

Obviously not the best movie, but it's the first major Canadian bilingual film that I know of. More bilingual movies should be made then.

Somehow, I don't think you guys are old enough to appreciate why this has a rating of 7.3 (I rated it a 9). When I was growing up, Canadian features had limited release, but also limited popular appeal. They were always about morose subjects (Sweet Hereafter) or incredibly depressing (Going Down the Road). Later on, it seemed that Canadian films would only be noticed on the world stage if they were about something totally out of left field (female mortician having sex with corpses, people getting turned on by car crashes, etc.). Most were Film Festival fare but were more or less films which were difficult to sit through. They may have been quality films, but they were not entertaining (IMHO).

This film is completely different. It was incredibly enjoyable, and the lines were witty, poignant, and often hilarious. In fact, it was one of the best buddy cop movies I have seen in years. I wish Canada had been concentrating on making movies like this instead of focusing on limited appeal Art-House stories. This movie was great! The hockey tie-in was very funny, the action was tense, and the film was very well done. I thought it was superb.

Yer stretchin' Rooster! Guess you never saw "The Wrong Guy" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0120536/) or "Perfectly Normal" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0100347/) or "Brain Candy" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0116768/). Yep! Them's depressin' films alrighty!

And of course we'll overlook the little factoid that "Road" and "Hereafter" were released 27 years apart! How about "The Grey Fox" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0085622/)? Guess you missed "C.R.A.Z.Y." too (http://imdb.com/title/tt0401085/)?

For that matter, just what HAVE you seen?

reply

I have never heard of the The Wrong Guy, nor Perfectly Normal. Brain Candy was just an extended Kids in the Hall episode. I remember The Grey Fox simply because the CBC has been airing it every year for more than 20 years. And I did see CRAZY in France, and did enjoy it quite a bit (although there is an argument that it could fit into my generalization concerning Canadian films).

But you see, your reply only seems to me to prove my point. Obviously, I was stereotyping. Not all Canadian films will fit into my nicely defined definition. The films I am generally subjected to in France are Cannes film festival fodder. For the most part, I can't stand them. I have found over the years that the French and Canadian film industry have a lot in common; not enough money to make big budget films with lots of special effects, therefore they need to feature pretty crazy topics in order to garner any attention at all. In France, a movie is "typically French" if everyone dies at the end, usually by suicide or some incredibly nasty and drawn out disease, and the film gets more and more depressing as it progresses. Again, there are exceptions but when was the last Palme D'Or winner actually enjoyable? (example, the 2005 winner was about a loser who sells his baby because his welfare cheque isn't big enough).

And no, I am not saying films with big budgets and lots of special effects are better (ID4 was crap), but I am saying that the typical Canadian or French film tend only to get noticed if they feature bizarre subject matters. In France, there have been a spate of movies about old men (over 50) having relationships with young girls (under 15). In Canada, there have been a bunch of odd relationship movies that I remember from the last 10 years (Crash, Exotica, Kissed, etc.) and they are the only ones which make it over the ocean. I don't remember EVER seeing a Canadian buddy cop movie, and noted that there was not one in your list either.

The Story: a "Colombo" film may be interesting to watch, even while we know what would happen, so not all film have to make you guess about who is what. The story has to unify the different scenes, while not being boring. The story does not have to be 'complex'. Here, the story line is good because it maintains the suspens, all along. Nowhere you can tell in advance what comes next, isn't it?

The scenes are also interesting, and somehow not as what you have necessary seen somewhere else. Yes, a sex scene is, basically, a sex scene, but the one in this film is unique. Finding a dead body is about as boring as it can, in general, but it is required to make the story start. Here, it is not boring, but quite laughable. Adding emotions, or laugh, to otherwise common scene, that is Art, and requires good acting. There is also a good switch between tension and ridicule, all along the film. Sure, the cultural effect is for something, the film is basically bi-lingual, that is also quite out of the ordinary, for a film, and, surely, nicely integrated. Even special effects are... not-american. As example, near the end, the Quebecer flic jump on top of the moving car. In a US film, there would have been 4 different point of view, lot of car changing course to make the unwanted passenger fall, and would have took 30 seconds, minimun. Well, here, it took only 2 sec, max, in a much more realistic, not american super heros, way.

Sure, it has its problem too (as WHEN the flic starts to jump falling toward the top of the car, the camera cleary show the flic is already positionned higher, but 'behind' the car, he could not hit the top roof, not at all) but personnaly, I give more than 7.3.

I enjoy movies that are like no other; it deals with the politics between quebec and ontario, spoofs a few hockey figures (Don Cherry and Gary Bettman) and bilingualism.

I get that it's not for everyone but for a bilingual hockey fan from Ontario I enjoyed it immensely and rated it a 9.
