Actually what she did was perform an emergency tracheotomy. She used the knife to puncture a hole and placed the ink pen barrel in the hole to provide a breathing tube for the victim. When you have an extreme allergic reaction to something your throat closes off preventing your ability to breath properly. As Nancy said DO NOT try this at home unless you have been thoroughly trained in advance lifesaving courses!!

But than again, nancy drew would totally know how to do an emergency trach. It's an emergency field medical skill. Now if nancy had to treat tension pneumothorax, than i be a little hold up!
I wondered about her ability to perform that mini-operation. I think that the Nancy Drew character was supposed to be proficient at first aid. But I was wondering if that was beyond the usual first aid skills.
