He did, remember we see him sitting next to Ali.
I think he missed the fight because he went down to the hotel pool.
He missed the fight because he figured Ali aka the American dream would be beaten. So yeah he went down to the pool and got hammered.

Apparently he made some racist statements about two black guys fighting and then dumped a large bag of weed in the pool, and began to swim. But later he met him and was one of the few people to ever smoke and drink in front of Ali. Thompson became a fan and called Ali one of his personal heroes.
