I gotta agree with Buffet and his first wife

It's sad that he shot himself - I've often wondered what he would have had to say about events since then. I've been a fan ever since I first read his work. I saw him speak a couple of times, but I never indulged myself too much in his personal life beyond what he published so there were some interesting insights that I wasn't aware of that this film shed some light on.

For good or ill, he is no longer with us, but he is missed.

Agreed. I think this man was an intriguing, intelligent, and interesting individual. Tragic he took his life. This movie was excellent for personal insight, most of which HST never offered in life and that added to his mystique.

I heard he was just in very poor health, and decided he didn't want to live in with the level of pain he was in all the time.

I think you're right. I just finished reading the Gonzo novel. He was in extremely poor health and broke his leg from which he never really recovered from. He could hardly do anything for himself anymore, including walking. His body failed him in the end and he wanted to go out on his terms while he still could. That's how I understood it anyway.
