Who the hell is this "Tift Merritt"?

I saw her name on the box, under special features, "Wayward and Weary" a tribute to hunter s. thompson, live acoustic performance by Tift Merritt, not knowing who she is, I looked her up online and she looks too young to be anyone who actually knew Hunter, which leaves me feeling like this is just a shameless plug for a singer who wants to sell more records, something Hunter would've appreciated I'm sure, using his name to make money, if that's not the Hunter S. Thompson Ideal i don't know what is.
