Helen Slater should be in this.

I've no idea if anyone hear knows who Helen Slater is, but I'll say this much. She is one of my favorite actresses. I think she would be an excellent choice as a part for this movie, because not only is she one of the greatest actresses ever, but she is also Jewish. I personally think she is the best. If you don't see where I'm coming from, I suggest you look at some of her films. She is quite wonderful, believe me. She is also the most gorgeous woman to have ever walked the earth! Her talents ascend further than just vocal diction and deliverance. She embodies the role, and brings you a real character. Methinks Helen Slater should partake.

I really agree! Helen Slater needs one heck of a good showcase again. She would also look really good next to Jeff Goldblum. I can see possibilities, but then I've never read the novel. Oh well, I am sure there is a good part for Ms. Slater in this film somewhere!

reply

As always...I like the way you think TruPretender! The wonderful Ms. Slater should have a good solid performance again. I would love to see this film as a possibility.

reply

She could maybe play his wife who died in the camps. :)

reply

That makes for a dramatic time...methinks. Have you read the book?

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

Yes, most of it. :) It's quite intense actually. See my comments on "the novel" thread. :D

reply

I love intensity! I'll definitely check out your comments on the novel.

BTW-Are there any other roles that Helen could do? Besides his wife, I mean?

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

Hmmmm....well, there is another important female role, but she's supposed to be very young, like in her twenties. In the mental hospital Adam has a sexual relationship with a beautiful but somewhat cold, neurotic nurse.

:)

Oh wait, there's also this other important role, the Commandant's wife. (in the flashbacks) But this woman is so unbelievably hideous (I mean, morally and spiritually) that I don't know if Helen would want to opt for a role like that...but then, roles like that can get you noticed as well :)

reply

Hideous and ugly....that's the one thing we haven't seen her do yet. I think she'd be great at that! I am so going to read the book when I can. Anyway, I wish Helen did do something like that. It could earn her a nomination or something.

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

Well, the woman is supposed to be physically pretty, but a disgusting, selfish monster on the inside. ;)

Whoever plays her will no doubt get attention because EVERYONE is going to remember her character. (provided they kept her in the screenplay)

I hope you like the book! :) It starts off a little slow, but gets much better. ;)

reply

Thanks. I'm so looking forward to reading it!

reply

No problem! ;)

I have a really beaten-up copy from my college library and I hope to get a pristene, new copy to keep! :D I can't wait until the "movie tie-in" edition with Jeff's picture on the front comes out!!!!!! :D

reply

Me neither! I love movie-tie-in versons of novels and novelizations! I collect them! He he! I just ordered this book from the store the other day. I'll be reading it by next week for sure!

I still hope Helen Slater is at least approached to do this film. She needs a good come-back.

On the other hand, I wonder who all will be involved?

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

I think the only one they cast so far is Jeff Goldblum. They're in the process of casting others now. :)

Let's hope Helen gets a shot. :D

reply

Yes, let's hope! In the meantime, I'll keep you updated on the book...when I start reading it!

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

I just want to see Helen Slater in a good role. If there is a possibility in this film...then make it happen people!

There are pretenders among us...

reply

I just started reading the book, it has a very mellow tone to it, but it's all the same enjoyable.
I still want Helen Slater to do it

This limbo is no place, to be a digit in another space!

reply

By mellow do you mean sad?

I was just about to ask how you were finding it! :)

I just finished the book myself. Trust me, you'll like it a lot.

So as of right now, who do you think Helen should play?

reply

Well, it easy to remember where I left off. I haven't even finished the first chapter yet. I'm so busy.

About Helen's role....how old does that nurse Jenny have to be? The one Adam is sexually active with? I think Helen could do that. I'm still breaking into the story. It's so smooth right now.

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

I think she's like 22 or something, 22 or 23.

But I just checked Helen's picture (when you said she was in city slickers I though you meant someone else entirely) and I saw just how beautiful she is.
Maybe they could make Jenny a little older. Also, I still think she would be great as Adam's wife! :)

Plus, I never knew she played Thalia on Batman: The Animated Series. (Thalia looks a bit like her too.) That is so cool!

BTW, having read some of the book, don't you think Jeff Goldblum is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT to play this guy??

reply

YES SIR! Mr. Goldblum IS perfect for the role! I can't wait to see what happens when production starts!

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

Didn't we hear about production happening in April? That's good enough time for contacting a certain Ms. Slater for the film!

There are pretenders among us...

reply

I think they're still in the casting stage, and preproduction.

The actual filming (in Israel, Romania, and Germany I think) starts this coming March. ;)

reply

Well, I hope they hurry up. I just passed the second chapter in the book, I think Adam is an allegory, or a symbol of god, er something. It mentions an opinion that a desert is where god really is, and that only insane people will hear him, and feel him. Kinky? Yes, but it's a great read!

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

What kind of patients are depicted in the story?

I wonder how they're going about the casting...?

Most of them are Holocaust survivors but VERY seriously disturbed ones, and not all Holocaust survivors are that way.

Some of the patients are schipzophrenics, paranoid, or have some kind of dementia. And there is a little boy later on, not a Holocaust survivor, who is pscyhotic and literally believes he's a dog.

I wonder how they're going about the casting...?

Don't know, but I'd imagine that unlike with Jeff, they are probably going to cast unknowns, or at least not "big stars." :)

reply

I reached the part of the book with his twin...Adam has a twin! I haven't read too deep into it I just glanced over it last night while I was reading. I can't wait to see what happens with this. Am I correct in thinking that his twin is not quite insane as he is?

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

Well, actually.... his twin is a figment of his imagination. He doesn't exist, he's basically an amalagm of who Adam used to be before the War, since Adam was a student of Philosophy and Theater himself. No one can see Herbert except Adam. Herbert basically voices all of Adam's fears and insecurities, he's his alter ego. That's why I think this book is sort of like Schindler's List meets a Beautiful Mind.

reply

You're right about the list, and the mind mix thing. I read to the part where he was found with his head in the guitar case, and nurse Jenny is trying to make him stop the charade. I also like how the woman who built the rehabilitation center, and her friend, have the theory about feeling the presence of god through all the pain and suffering of the desert.

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

I just finished the segment of the story about Adams daughters, one died, with his wife, and the other was taken from them years ago, but she is still alive! The book grows more and more compelling by the chapter! It also explained more about his wife, Gretchen, and HELEN SLATER really should be the wife, in flashbacks. Of course, she should just plain be in this film anyway, I think she'd really enjoy it, and benefit from a powerful story as such.

Helen Slater: Actress, Musician, and ultimate Paragon!

reply

I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it! :D

I really think this film will be something amazing.

reply

Has either Mr. Goldblum or Mr. Shrader contacted Ms. Slater yet? hehe.

reply

I Just finished the book! That was a strange book. I'm not even sure I understood all of what it was saying, as it was translated into English from Hebrew, wasn't it? Anyway, I know the good role for our lovely Ms. Slater, she could be Hannah Anne, a woman that one of the patients meets at a bar.

reply

BTW what did you think of Klein's wife?

reply

That was a bit strange, but I guess she was more so a friend, then foe. I can see Helen Slater in that role.

The vicious circle of depression makes me depressed! -Siouxsie Sioux-

reply

STORY SPOILERS!

My opinion was that she was a sick, amoral b****! In some ways what she did was even worse than what Klein did to him because she used him for her pleasure like that; the one worse thing than being treated like an animal I think (which he was) is being treated like an animal and a sexual object. She didn't even see anything wrong with what her husband was doing; not just to him but to all those people being massacred right outside her bedroom window...

She no doubt contributed to his madness by what she did, although he was probably half-crazy already when he met her, judging from his behavior.

Helen Slater might get noticed for playing someone like her though: evil people in films, if played well, tend to get noticed more than those who play "good" supporting characters.

But she just seems too sweet to play someone like that. I think she'd be better as Gretchen, Adam's wife.

reply

Helen's innocent features are what would make her great.
...You're right about the amoral B****. I didn't follow as good as I would have liked. As I said, it was so hard to get into at times. It was hard for me, at the time of reading the book, to clarify how nasty some of the characters were. Anyway, Ms. Slater is probably the one person I would like to see as nasty and unholesome, because she hasn't quite done that thus far in her career, and I think she'd benefit from it. :-)

The vicious circle of depression makes me depressed! -Siouxsie Sioux-

reply

Yes, I definitely think the role would be good for her.....:)

The book is sometimes hard to get through....very complicated....for instance remember Arthur, another guy in the Asylum? It was hard to understand if he was supposed to Adam's friend or enemy, or both....remember those letters he wrote and how he said Adam was "Ilse Koch's dog" or something?

reply

Yeah, Arthur disliked Adam, yet he was obsessed with him. Arthur also burned his daughter, right? Wasn't he the great arsenist? Anyway, I do remember him.

The vicious circle of depression makes me depressed! -Siouxsie Sioux-

reply

Yeah, Arthur was the one who did that. Kind of upsetting to read that part.

Also, you won't believe this but:

reply

AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did we make some noise or what???

I like this sport, and I still think Helen Slater should play the amoral bi+ch in the film. It would be a great role for her to bite on!

reply

Yeah, just goes to show, make your voice heard.

I don't know who they cast for Klein's wife, but you never know...maybe someone will see this board and think of her. I actually do think she'd be pretty good.

BTW, I checked the film's status--they're already in the filming stage. But I don't know which scenes they're filming--they could be in Israel now, in the hospital scenes.

Klein's wife would appear in the flashbacks, which are being filmed [b + w] in Europe, on a concentration camp set. (specifically, in Romania. The scenes of Adam's past are all in Germany.)

I still can't believe Willem Dafoe is Klein....at first I was surprised but now he seems perfect.

(FYI, if you're planning to see Spiderman 3, he has a small cameo in that too!)

He's worked with Schrader before (Auto Focus I think) so maybe that's partly why he was chosen.

reply

I can't actually see DeFoe as Klein, but I'm not going to allow myself to think anything. I am excited to see what he will do with the role.

BTW-Did you read about Helen Slater at the Hollywood Hero ceremony in the IMDb news today?
Crazy, huh?

The vicious circle of depression makes me depressed! -Siouxsie Sioux-

reply

Do we know who is playing Kleins wife? Is there still a possibility that Helen Slater could do it?

I'm livin' in desperate times. Bein' alive's my only crime...

reply

Just a wild guess: Could it be this woman?

Juliane Köhler

I guess we'll know more soon. It could be any one of the unidentified actresses on the list. Plus you never know, Helen Slater might always be considered.

reply

Helen just appeared at the Metropolis, Illinois annual Superman Celebration this past week. She was a major hit, and garnered a huge amount of attention. I wasn't there, but I have written, and read from people who were. She stated an interest in appearing in "Smallville", especially because the character of Supergirl will be involved in the 07-08 season. Now, the producers are working her into the season for a guest appearance...so you never know. Maybe our little thread can spark the same kind of interest...?

reply

Well, banshee, it looks like we're out of luck on this one. I just read on another post, that They have finished filming. No Helen Slater here, unless there's something we don't know...

reply

No Helen huh? That's a real bummer. And after all this time.

Oh well, didn't we almost win it all?

reply

Slater was absolutely stunning in "Supergirl". I haven't seen her lately but she was in fact one of the most beautiful women to walk the earth. Frankly, a woman as beautiful as her must be part Angel and therefore her feet never actually touch the earth!! :)

As for being Jewish, who cares? Being Jewish shouldn't have any significance in whether someone should be in a film or not. I'm of another ethnic group and don't care when people who are Jewish are playing roles specific to my ethnic background.

America put the "fun" back into "Fundamentalism".

reply

I hope I wasn't coming off as saying I wanted her to be in the film because she was Jewish. I wanted to see her in the film anyway. She's my favorite actress, and I certainly agree that she is the most stunning woman on earth, whether or not she actually touches the ground...LoL.

Can I?-set myself on fire, to prove some kind of desire

reply

Helen Slater? Seriously?

reply

I wonder how many other upcoming films this person went to to try to shill for slater. It's pretty hilarious.
