**SPOILER** I liked this movie, but I'm not too sure that it's striving for realism. I mean, other than the fact that his mother is recently deceased and she's going through a divorce, it's pretty much Hollywood feel-good fantasy. Let's review the plot. Gorgeous woman allows teenager to steal her car. He takes it on a road trip for hundreds of miles, using her cell phone, with roaming charges, to chat with her in a very friendly way as he drives. He accidentally mentions another female to her. Jealous, she makes a trip hundreds of miles south to supposedly retrieve her car, and it is revealed that she's had a crush on him all along. They start driving together and behave as if they've been friends or even lovers for years. He inexplicably ditches the very friendly and gorgeous woman. He winds up stuck in Mexico after being beat up by his brother. He's sitting helpless on the side of the road, when somehow, like an angel, the gorgeous woman finds him and is very sweet and comforting- not angry at all. She takes his virginity, arranges a reconciliation meeting with his brother, then drives him to Louisiana per his request. And they all live happily ever after, and have a good bowl of Jambalaya to boot. OK, I made up that last part, I'm a bit hungry at the moment.
That being said, this was my favorite character of Zooey's so far. It may be fantasy, but she's just so incredibly sweet and "real" somehow.
I don't really think (500) was all that fake, either- it was, after all, despite the disclaimers before AND after the movie, based on a true story. Juno, OK, I can see how one can think it's kinda contrived indie. IMHO all three movies are more than decently entertaining.
