Age difference between Kate + Mercer?

Just wondering how old Mercer was? I think Kate said she was 23. I got the impression Mercer was still in School? So he would be 17?

She was 24, he said he was 19.

19, he tells her that in the film. He got held back a year because he had to leave highschool to take care of his mom.
