unresolved?

Just finished watching this movie, loved the style of cinematography, the performances and the overall premise - but does anyone else feel a little unsatisfied with the ending? What happens with the girl, the doctor, Les? I'm not slating the movie because its so much better than most of the crap churned out, but I felt like the ending was rushed, didn't reach its full potential, and came out a little mawkish and messy.

I had similar thoughts .. but after reconsideration i believe that stretching the ending would only weaken the movie .. so often the epilogue ruins the feeling that the movie worked so hard to build .. i believe that this was the perfect ending for this movie.

This movie does not need a happy ending .. it is irrelevant to the story whether the doc and the suits get busted or whether Les hooks up with the girl or not... in my opinion thats not what the movie was about.

I loved this movie thought at some points it was depressing and the feeling of emptiness that it leaves you with at the ending perfectly complements the story

On a side note i think Michael Rapaport delivers an astounding performance and he was the reason this movie drew my attention in the first place.

I didn't like the emptiness at the end - it felt like the was some opportunity for a grand emotional climax that was missed. I haven't the slighest clue how that could have been achieved though. Agree about Rapaport - he was sensational.

I just finished watching the film, and I thought it was magnificent. I'm going to have to disagree with you guys on this one. The story was resolved. The main character wanted to overcome his own mediocrity and become "special". Remember when he was talking about superheroes in the comic books? He stated that it wasn't so much there superpowers that fascinated him, but the fact that they were unstoppable.

At the end of the movie (after figuring out that he didn't have any superpowers), he refused to bend his will to the men in black. These men were like villains. They wanted to sell there drug to a major company knowing that they had terrible side effects. Even if it was on a small scale it would've ruined lives. After the main characters unwillingness to cooperate (even at risk of his own life), they knew that they would not able to sell the drug. There attempt to profit from a harmful product were foiled by this "unstoppable" guy. His actions probably saved a lot of lives. That sacrifice made him "special".

The main story arc was resolved. Everything else didn't have to be shown on screen. This film is up there with Unbreakable.

I can't find "Special" in videostores yet,but I'll keep looking for it. Is it a comedy or a drama?

reply

as most good comedies are, it is a little of both...

I think the is best summation of the movie, and you're totally right on. I didn't quite get at first what he meant when he said, "you can't stop me" bit the way you put it everything comes together and makes sense. (I wasn't paying full attention to the movie, which is part of the reason I didn't quite get it)

Thanks for the good explanation and it dies seem, in fact, that the movie was resolved well.
