Which actor pulled out of lead role?

Per the DVD extras, an actor was cast in the lead and was present for all the rehearsals, but changed his mind just as shooting was about to begin over money. He isn't named, and the only actor I can find listed anywhere as having been 'in talks' to appear as the lead was Liev Schrieber. Does anyone know more?
