interesting difference from the story (minor spoiler)

I have watched this movie many times, love it, its not perfect, but it is a faithful rendition of the story, and i have nothing negative to say, but i did notice a change made from the source story aside from the 'framing device' of 'the man' narrating his discovery to someone he begs to burn the papers...

it is stated at two points in the movie that Inspector Legrasse is dead. In the original story he was very much alive as far as the narrator knew, including the fact that the narrator had met with him.

It is quite possible that the filmmakers view Legrasse's survival as an oversight of Lovecraft's, and took the chance to 'correct' it. In the audio play version of this story, the cultist speaking at the end announces intention to 'take care' of Legrasse in the near future, so it is a consistent observation, and in keeping with the original apparent intent of Lovecraft's that all who manage to piece together anything of substance about the cult without being in the cult don't survive long, as evidenced by the story's subtitle (which doesn't appear on most versions of the story) indicating that this text is found, with the other items mentioned, in the estate papers of the narrator.

Yes, that's an interesting point.
