What did you rate ''The Call of Cthulhu'' (2005)?

imdb.com/title/tt0478988/ratings

This amateur attempt to recreate a silent film is fitfully amusing, but it's not very good. And the idea to adapt an H.P. Lovecraft story faithfully was a bad one considering how difficult it is to follow the plot.

I rated this film 3/10. What did you rate it? What did you think of it?

reply

A 7/10.
The only thing that distracted me considering a level of amateurism was the obvious use of digital camera equipment, which gave the movie a too-crisp appearance at times. Besides of that, I love the cardboard Caligari-style sets and the stop-motion Cthulhu. Great work!

reply

Did you have any trouble following the plot?

reply

No, not at all. And I hadn't read Lovecraft's story previous to watching this film.
Maybe read it here and give it another try: http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600031h.html#04

I might read the story, but I don't know if I'll go back to the movieā€”not when there are so many actual silent-era films I haven't seen yet. Are you a fan of silent movies?

I didn't have any trouble with the plot...but I've read the short story a couple of times. I'm giving it an 8...too much monster to be scary IMHO. The cultists scene was truly creepy though.

reply

The stop-motion monster was kind of fun to watch, but no, it wasn't very scary.

10/10 - perfect in pretty much every way. So amazingly done. Among the 10 best silents ever made! And this film was not hard to follow!

I might have been in a distracted mood when I saw it. It seems no one else had trouble with the plot. What are some of your favorite silent films?

My favorite silent film of all time:

Metropolis (1927), directed by Fritz Lang. The great-granddaddy of big epic sci-fi films.

I'm very eager to see Metropolis again. It's been a long time, and within the past year or two, I've seen several other Fritz Lang films, including the Mabuse films, Spies, Die Nibelungen, Scarlett Street, Woman in the Window, You Only Live Once, Cloak and Dagger and The Blue Gardenia.

I gave it a 10/10 because I love silent movies (particularly horror films and comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton) and was impressed with how well they were able to make "The Call of Cthulhu" resemble films that were 80 or 90 years old.

I knew a little about the characters and world going into it, so it wasn't difficult for me to follow at all.

Thanks for the reply. I wish I had enjoyed this film as much as you and the others on this thread. Like you, I enjoy Chaplin and Keaton and love the horror movies of that era, particularly The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. I expected to enjoy this film more.

I haven't read the story before watching the film, but it wasn't hard to follow.
I haven't rated this film, because I usually don't do that at all, but for what it is, it was great. I'd say 9 for effort, the only negative thing I can think of is that they used digital camera.

reply

Gave it a 2/10, but it got 3 marks for being faithful to the short story.

I'm not a fan of 1920's film, so I didn't have a fanboygasm over the idea of this. I am however a massive fan of Lovecraft, and this film just completely lacked the atmosphere that the stories had. Honestly, I could not believe that the HPL society would put their name to this, it looked more like a 1st year film student's attempt to look 'edgy' and artistic.

Yes, I realise its low-budget, and they aren't professional actors (or if they are, they need a new job) and it's a homage and all that crap. I also realise that I couldn't do a better job, but then I acknowledge my failings and don't attempt to make a steaming pile of sh!t.

The sad part is, there are fanboys out there giving this a 10 just because it is faithful. What's worse, is their "Whisperer in Darkness" is even worse... I'm sure HPL is rolling in his grave...
