The title of this message may be somewhat misleading, as to tell the truth I can't say I understood all of it, but when in Marrakesh recently I wanted to go to a foreign cinema (being English) and we ended up in a screening for 'What a Wonderful World'... and I must say - I was VERY impressed. Also a filmmaker, I was blown away by so many of the elements that brought this movie together to make it what cinema should be - an amazing EXPERIENCE.

The cinematography for a start was phenominal - rich and textured - the soundtrack was perfect to hold your hand for the entire journey. The characters, each so nicely developed you could almost lean forward in acknowledgement and encouragement at every decision they made. The story between the son and the father being some of the most moving moments... the desperation transcending the fact I barely speak a word of French.

I'm getting my hands on a subtitled copy so I can put together the final pieces of this nicely layered story - but I'd encourage anyone - French speaking or not - to see this film, or rather, feel it, as I surely did in a darkened cinema in Marrakech.

I was DOP on WWW, and articles like yours are the things that make our business wonderful. It's a great film, I'm really happy with it. It's not an easy film, it jumps from style to style. Faouzi and I worried a lot during the shoot about how we were going to tie all these disparate elements together to get a coherent look which was big enough to incorporate the love story, the burlesque and the action. The lab in Paris, Arane, did a fantastic job on the grading, you probably saw the copy we made for Venice, which is the best print. It was released in France last week, I've no idea if there's a UK distributor. It was at the London Film Festival in November (?), it's doing well on the festival circuit, it's at Rotterdam next week, so there's probably an english subtitled version out there somewhere.
Thanks again for those comments, I'll pass them on.........
