Ungh...Cocaine?

I really like Zizek and his theories and it s actually extremely entertaining to follow his line of thoughts. Still I can not get over the impression that he s constantly on coke!? He s touching his nose so often (about once every 5 seconds), his gestures are so over-acted, his talk is so far-out! Especially in the New York scenes (at his publisher s place) he s totally going crazy. I ve seen people acting like this, but I ve never seen someone who wouldn t be filled up to the top with something acting like this.

But I dont want to assume anything Is he really like this or is he snorting a line before stepping in front of the cam? What s your opinion?

PS: How expensive is coke in Slovenia anyway? I guess it s one of the main routes from the producing countries to central europe, so I guess it s rather cheap and the quality rather good.

I thought of the cocaine thing to when he was on Democracy Now! back in May. He seemed to get progressively more tweaked as the interview went on, yet he didn't go anywhere to get loaded. Maybe it's crystal meth....who knows. I saw him during a speech on EGS (European Graduate School)...there's clips on youtube. He was doing to same thing! I'm becoming more convinced that it's a nervous tick or something.

I know this is a bit late, but still. I don't know the prices of cocaine here, but I think it's not that expensive as it is also quite popular with young people with no money :P - ow, and Žižek is travelling around the world all the time so prices here doesn't mean much, ...

Well it doesn't matter. The fact is that Žižek mentioned many times he is not a drug user, and that he never even tasted a drug (or went to the disco :D). The only alcoholic drink he is able to drink is Baileys, but he never gets drunk.

He doesn't use drugs or drink because of an old UDBA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDBA) commandment which says: "enemy never sleeps, so you can't afford a lost of control".

This is all I can say about this subject, and sorry for any mistake regarding my English.

reply

Žižek has anxiety issues and occasionally panic attacks. It's his nervousness that causes him to talk fast and sniff/rub his nose, not drugs.

What seems more logical is that he either has ADHD or Asperger (milder form of autism), which many times goes hand in hand with being so intelligent and such a fast thinker. I have ADHD and Asperger and really recognize all his gestures etc. from personal experience, it's not too weird. People think I'm on drugs constantly, and no, I'm not, but people just don't understand those things.

Funny you mention this: Just rewatching "...Ideology". It can be downright distracting.

I'd chalked it up to his being perennially out-of-shape, hence sort of prone to an interminable low-grade common cold, hence a constant nasal drip. Sort of wondered why his producer didn't budget a modicum of decongestant medication, and have the best boy buzz him an hour before a shoot to remind him to pop a pill.

Never thought of the sniffer/tweaker angle. Hmm.

Especially now, after "Breaking Bad" and the Eastern European connection! B^)
