Why did Elaine take in Claire; why did Petra ride off on her horse?

There are two things about the plot that weren't properly explained:

- Why was Elaine so friendly to Claire and why did she take her in to her house? You'd imagine Elaine would hate Claire - as witnessed by her line "that minging bitch" - so why was she so willing to be kind to her after she found out that Claire hadn't got long to live?

- Why did Petra ride off on her horse after her encounter with the stable lad? One minute she was encouraging him - she said "sit down here" and looked as if she was about to give him a blow-job, then she flipped and rode off on her horse, in a hell of a state. What provoked such a dramatic change? Did I miss something?

I can't answer the first question; I guess it was to show that there is compassion in some people regardless of circumstance.

As to the second Question, I guess it was a typical display of Female assertion - constantly changing her mind etc etc.

Perhaps anxietyresister would be better placed to answer this one, as it would appear to be the sort of thing IT's better placed to confirm. Might be worth dropping IT a P/M?

elaine took her in as she realised it wasnt claires fault she just fell in love with him. he was married with children and claire wasnt. he was the one who should have been responsible and said no.

Elaine said to her husband, "You started this you must finish it". She understood that they were in lobe an i guess it would have bn wrong if claire had died while the husband was away "trapped" at home. also she maybe wanted some control? and of course compassion

Good take on that fairyfootsteps123, what a refershing change to have someone educated commenting about this Drama. I appreciate that, as I'm sure do many (barring a bitter and twisted cynic who will no doubt post it's own limited repartee!)

I thought this was by far the best drama i have ever seen with a very
touching story line. If anyone has recorded it i would really
appreciate if they could get in contact so i can have a copy. I would
recommend it for everyone to watch if you like emotional dramas. Very
good acting by Tamzin and co. Good storyline. EVERY SHOULD HAVE WATCHED
IT! Loved Kate Bush's song 'This Woman's Work' too! Very good for people to relate to!

Elaine took Claire in because as she rightly pointed out it was a situation where everyone could gain as much as was possible that way. They were all together - Claire was with the man she really loved - and so was Elaine. They all kept a bit of self respect, and after Claire's death there was a place from which they could build their marriage again. If he had stayed with Elaine while Claire died alone or with that prat of an ex he would never have forgiven himself or his wife. If he had left Elaine he could never have gone back and say "hey she's snuffed it now, so shall we go back to how we were". This was the one way to save the family life. As for the minging bitch bit - well just because Elaine knew the way forward and the best way to get through the situation didnt mean she didnt have any hurt or resentment. I dont think she was some angel, some symbol of Godly perfection - I just think she was a very shrewd and clever woman with a fair amount of compassion thrown in too. I can honestly say I was right with her all the way and would probably have done exactly the same. As for Petra - good grief wasn't every teenager confused about how far to go with guys when they were still new to it all? One voice says - he wants you to, he will like you more if you do, another says this is scary, another says it might feel nice, another says what if he hurts me or I hurt him, another says my friends all do it, another says what if I mess up and he laughs at me etc etc etc. She went off on the horse because that was where she felt back in control. For me it was a perfect parallel to the main story as it symbolised just how much like her mother she was - but also that she still held on to the wild and reckless part of youth that her parents were craving and led to the affair in the first place - it sort of explained the motivation behind what was happening with the adults, as well as being a natural reaction of a teenager scared of growing up and scared of her parents being people other than just her parents. I thought it was a fantastically constructed drama - certainly one of the best ITV has offered in a while, and there have been some pretty top notch ones competing.

What? I'm really hoping I'm misunderstanding you, because it was pretty clear that Petra was uncomfortable with the situation and the boy was being a total a**hole about it (calling her a pricktease, grabbing her by her arm etc). The feeling I got from the scene was that the situation could've turned violent if she hadn't gone off on the horse, the boy seemed pretty agitated and said something like "You're not leaving until we've made it properly".
Changing your mind about sex (especially if you're young and inexperienced) is normal and understandable, it's really rather offensive to chalk it up to some kind of stereotypical female moodiness like she's a total airhead "constantly changing her mind" like a "typical" woman.

out of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the least
