Did the wife take him back?

I wasn't able to tell just where they were in the marriage did they go back to normal if that is at all possible. Or did he stay with his wife until the lover died. I got the feeling his wife wanted to help him and her with letting them be together under her roof. Then is is more easily to reconcile afterwords instead of him being away from his family.
