Was Leslie Mann's character suppose to be a hypocrite?

This women screams at her husband for playing fantasy baseball while she goes out clubbing. Twice. And shamelessly flirts with the guys in the club. What is going on here? Is she suppose to be a hypocrite or is this just bad writing?

The point wasn't that he played fantasy football it was that kept secrets from her and considering her husband got a lapdance while married to her the flirting isn't that bad.

Judd Apatow has said that she wasn't supposed to be a bitch (though I did think she was a bit bitchy to Ben during the birth).

If it was about keeping secrets why did she say: "This is worse then cheating" and give him a self righteous lecture about how she wants to have time to herself?

She came across as a hypocrite because she does have time for herself. Enough time to go clubbing.

She was definitely a hypocrite. She's Judd Apatow's wife, and he's totally whipped (just listen to his audio commentaries to understand his personality), so naturally he doesn't recognize what a hypocrite she is.

reply

Yeah, i kept thinking this during the whole movie, and I didn't watch it with audio commentaries turned on. She's demanding and critical. She does what a lot of wives do, her complaints resonate with the audience, but she's so shrill about it. It's the same old dilemna every wife encounters, speak up and be a 'bitch', or keep silent and be an unhappy martyr.

There's a difference between being aggressive (bitchy) and being assertive. Assertive is standing up for yourself so you don't get exploited and tends to be well received, aggressive puts pressure on others and is poorly received. Learning to be assertive can take some time and a lot of men and women don't know how to do it and instead come across as aggressive. Women think they can't speak up because they don't always know how to speak up without being bitchy.

Prior to that scene Debbie went clubbing once and left early to attend to a sick child in about 6 months, she went out once after that and didn't seem to have any friends except her sister.

Pete was going out all the time, leaving her at home with the kids and having a social life that didn't involve her at all. Of course they don't have to do everything together but he wasn't including her in any of it or thinking that she might want some time off apart from.

I didn't like Debbie but I can understand her point of view on that.

When she was yelling at the bouncer, she said she went there all the time. Was she just lying or did she really go clubbing all the time?

reply

Don't know but since the bouncer didn't recognize her she couldn't have gone there that often. I took that to mean she went clubbing a lot there when she was younger.

reply

Could have just been a different bouncer on the nights she was there...

Thank you! I didn't like Debbie and didn't agree with her most of the time but in that case she was definitely right. Pete was incredibly selfish and only ever thought about himself which was clear throughout the movie. You can still like Pete and recognise that he was wrong in this case. He went out all the time to spend time with his friends or go out by himself, which would be fine but he doesn't allow time for her to go out or have time for herself. She's seen going out twice in the whole movie and that was many months apart so it was clear that she didn't get to go out very often. He shouldn't have lied to her and he should've tried to compromise with her.
