Superbowl's Perfect Storm

After an eight-year run with numerous sensational games and a lot of great moments - Denver upsets Green Bay in wild back-and-forth SB, Rams stop Titans on the 1-yard-line on the final play, Baltimore returns to SB triumph, the Patriots upset the Rams in the first walk-off SB score ever, then triumph over the resilient Panthers in the most exciting SB of all, then beat the Eagles in only their second SB appearence, and Tampa Bay beats up the Raiders for their first SB win - I guess it was inevitable that there would be a perfect storm of disappointment for the Superbowl.

And yet the dismal qualities throughout were still painful - the bad officiating calls, the dismal quality of play, the entertainments that were worse than normal for the Superbowl. Just about everything went wrong in this Superbowl.

Oh well.

They can't all be great one's. Still it wasn't a blowout. Steelers only won by 11 points. I consider a 20 point lead to be a total blowout. Most people will disagree because they factor in the statistics and the officiating.

It wasn't the worst Superbowl, it definatly wasn't the greatest, to me this
one will be forgotten. I don't see Pittsburgh making it back, and the Seahawks will most likely turn out like the 98 Falcons, 94 Chargers, and 2000 Giants (im a Giant's fan). All three teams did the same thing. They all had great seasons, and when it came to the Superbowl they just didn't live up to what they had been doing all season. I imagine the Seahawks will not see another Superbowl shot for 10 years. Watch Seattle get annoyed and fire their Coach and trade off half of the good players who will go to another team they think they can win with. It disgusts me that this could very well happen when Holmgrin. He gets them to their first Superbowl and gets them their first successful playoff wins since 85.

Bottom line. The Steelers and Seahawks was a filler Superbowl, until the next dynasty takes off. I think it might be over for the Patriot's since they have already won 3 in 4 years. That seems to be a limit.

I don't think the Patriots' run is over by any means. The core group is still together and they were livid at themselves after blowing that Denver game. The last time they sucked that bad was in Week One of 2003 against Drew Bledsoe's Buffalo Bills following the release of Lawyer Milloy and Milloy's signing with the Bills in time for that game - they came out of that game determined to get even, and of course they did. The other revenge game that comes to mind involved the two meetings with Pittsburgh in 2004 - The Steelers pounded the Pats 34-20 and stopped their 21-game streak; the Patriots wanted revenge after that debacle, and they went for the kill immediately in the playoff game 41-27.

You're right that they can't all be great games - they'll just have to try again next year.

I agree the Steelers won't make it back, even though Roethlisberger overall is becoming a truly great quarterback - he does still have weaknesses in the playoffs (his Superbowl effort looked like his 2004 playoff games against the Jets and the Patriots) but the real problem for the Steelers remains Bill Cowher. Cowher's playoff run is famously littered with failures and he didn't coach a particularly inspiring game this time around. I just don't see him losing that playoff timidity he's shown so often over the years.

I think the Patriots will remain competitive, but they will start to fade away. Slower or faster depending on how quickly management starts poking the panic button.
