Big screen or straight to DVD?

Am I misreading the film's webpage or is the plan to take this film straight to DVD? I thought originally it was planned as a TV movie? I'm all confuzzled and stuff, someone enlighten me please. :)

Straight to DVD works for me, since I'm looking forward to this mainly so I can get my hands on the series prequel. ;)

Looks like it's straight to DVD - expected release May 8.

The trivia thing on the Rain page makes me nervous...mentions a cameo as a patron in the clothing store where Rain is employed. Now, I know the movie can't follow the book to the letter, but the book stressed repeatedly that Rain did not work! Latisha did not want Rain or Beni distracted from their schoolwork. I'm nervous and SO hoping this is not going to end up like the movie version of Flowers in the Attic, which was so far from the book it was almost unrecognizable.

At least there's a prequel...if the movie sucks, the prequel should keep me from screaming.

the movie will be released may 29 on DVD... as far as the changes to the book, they were minor... Rain was givin a job so that in the film, she would be doing her part to help her family as opposed to allowing her mother to carry the financial burden... made more of a character statement... also we made her a musical talent in the film ( as opposed to an actress ) to better suit the films needs... an actress "acting" in a film doesnt usually work well, and we felt a musical talent where we saw her perform would better portray her talent and invoke more emotion... hope that answers some questions.

Well, if this is going to be a movie then I need to go read the book!

*Possible spoilers*

I just saw this movie, and the changes made were pointless and did nothing to enhance the plot. Making Rain a musical talent instead of an actress wasn't bad, as the only thing I really enjoyed about this movie was hearing Sudano sing. She does have a lovely voice.

However, that does not make up for the travesty that is this movie. It's bad enough that it was changed so drastically from the book, but surely to goodness the filmmakers could've found a cast who could actually act. For example, the thug who killed Beni was given one of the larger roles in the film. The storyline was completely ridiculous and in no way followed the book, and this guy has to be the worst actor I've seen in a long time. It was a completely overdone stereotype, and I'm hoping that it was nepotism that landed this guy the role. Otherwise, maybe he won a contest or something.
