THE HEAVIEST EXTREME METAL BAND EVER....

My Chemical Romance. Ha! I jest, but who is THE HEAVIEST EXTREME METAL BAND EVER? My vote goes to Circle of Dead Children.

reply

I think credit has to go to Earth before it goes to Sunn.

reply

And Swans/Melvins, for allowing most extreme metal to happen in the first place

reply

Wow... I see Nile a lot here... I love Nile, but I wouldn't consider them the heaviest ever.

My vote would have to go to Cannibal Corpse. They are extreme, heavy, fast, but they do have rhythm. The lyrics themselves should scream "Extreme Metal," but once they have the music to back it up... it's Heavy Extreme Metal of Death!! :P

There's my vote.

I've only got Niles first album at home but if they're other stuffs sounds not much different then I'd might agree, but for my money the heaviest band I've listened to would be Obituary.

Anaal Nathrakh, 1349 and Marduk are 3 of the most extreme I can think of. All black metal though.

My vote goes to Anaal Nathrakh. There's bands that play louder and faster, but static noise is not very brutal imo. AN have enough melody to really let the brutality shine, paradozal as it may sound.

Ugggghhhh. There is nothing heavy about their endless BREEE BREEEEEE's and mediocre musicianship.

As for the topic at hand, My money's on Cannibal Corpse.

So no Despised Icon for you then ...

Though, compared to the other bands I've listed, Waking.. probably doesn't belong on that list. I think I included them because I was listening to them at the time of posting.

Cannibal Corpse are basically the granddaddies of gore soaked death metal as far as I'm concerned, one of my all time favorite bands, but they are no where near the list of heaviest, most brutal or extreme death acts out there.

reply

I'm not familiar with the rest of those bands on the list myself so I dont know how WTC compares to the rest of them.

Death Metal really isn't my thing. I'm more of a thrash guy myself so by my standards, Cannibal Corpse are the heaviest and most brutal.

reply

The others I listed aren't "deathcore", they are more traditional ultra brutal death metal with guttural gurgling\growling vocals, ultra fast blast beat drumming, heavy down-tuned guitars and sick whore-butchering lyrics. Maybe give Devourment's album "Molesting the Decapitated" a go (or their rehash "138" which has some demos on it also) and if you like them check out Disgorge's "Cranial Impalement" LP. Pretty heavy stuff.

As for Cannibal Corpse I prefer their older stuff, namely "Butchered at Birth", "Tomb of the Mutilated" and "The Bleeding". After Fisher took over vocal duties from Barnes I kind of lost interest in them. I wouldn't really consider Cannibal Corpse "thrash" as such (I'd consider Slayer thrash metal) but I suppose some of their older work could be called thrashy death metal.

I'm more of a Corpsegrinder fan myself. Barnes was a great gutteral vocalist but Cannibal Corpses sound was evolving and when Fisher stepped in he gave them new life. The Wretched Spawn is among their most brutal albums.

Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated are among my favorite metal albums of all time though.

reply

Did you ever use to listen to Corpsegrinder's previous band Monstrosity? I listened to them a bit back when I was a kid listening to other stuff like Suffocation, Napalm Death, Carcass et al.

The last Cannibal Corpse album I bought was "Vile", which I didn't think much of (probably what put me off Corpsegrinder). But yeah they have been churning out the albums pretty solidly since. I stick pretty close to the industry so I see this stuff coming out but don't really get a chance to listen to it. I think I've heard a few tracks off "The Wretched Spawn" but I couldn't recall any, one thing about that lp though is it has one KICK ASS album cover.

Vile was just okay IMO. Gallery of Suicide was pretty good though.

Brutal Death Metal Bands:
1. Black Dahlia Murder ("Nocturnal")
2. Necrophagist
3. Brain Drill ("Apocalyptic Feasting" is amazing; check out the drummer, Marco, on youtube)

BTW, CANNIBAL CORPSE ROCKS! God bless em, man, they still haven't lost their edge.

Benighted (France) is probably the heaviest I've listened to.

reply

I think that bands like Khanate, Burning Witch or Corrupted are a lot more extreme than bands like Brain Drill, Necrophagist or Nile. The latter bands focus not only on technical wizardry, but also on groove and "cool" riffs and often on catchy choruses, which makes them accessible to people that crave for extreme, but digestible music. Really extreme metal is also very inaccessible. Even the most metal-hardened death metal freaks usually steer away from extreme funeral doom or drone doom due to its inaccessibility. Often extremity lies in simplicity. Speedy songs may sound nice, but rrreeeaaalllyyyy slow songs test most people's patience. Which means that extreme doom is the heaviest and most extreme metal genre.

reply

Yeah I'd agree. Khanate is probably among the most extreme, along with drone bands like Sunno))), menacing doom bands like Evoken (theirs is probably the most crushing sound ever), Skepticism and Esoteric. Not very many people like 'em. Listening to them is like being crushed by the darkness inside a bottomless, black void. No hope of deliverance from the ominous, menacing, inescapable atmosphere. Not the kind of music I would recommend to everyone (in the metal community, i.e.), coz they're not a easy listen, and even harder to appreciate. . Really well stated, bruno.

reply

My vote goes to Meshuggah on their Chaosphere album. It's not like your 'ordinary metal', but at least I'm sure this album is a surefire way to scare the general public away from metal music.

Give Me A Minute And Ill Change Your Mind Give Me A Bullet And Ill Change Your Life - Slipknot

reply

I was going to mention The Berzerker too ;)
Their self-titled album is probably the craziest most extreme metal album ever. And we're talking about extreme metal here, not drone like Sunn O))) or Khanate, although i love them too.
Also i cannot conceive how Cannibal Corpse, Nile or Anaal Nathrakh can be mentioned in here, since they're melodic in some way. They have melodies in their music and their solos, which makes them "easy" listening and pleasing. The same goes for Strapping Young Lad for example, which has some crazy *beep* songs like "Sh!tstorm" "Happy Camper" or "Oh my F'cking God", but some melodic too, therefor i don't count them as the most extreme.
The Berzerker doesn't compromise in that area.
