How did you get into metal?

Im not sure if this is already a topic but im just realy interested to know how people got into metal. For me it was to be different so i started listening to Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf and others since everyone was listening to rap and pop and because i just didn't see what was so good about them. Then a friend introduced me to a Symphony X song and it just grabbed me and ive been listening to Death, Thrash and pretty much every genre ever since. Anyway i think it'll be interesting so go ahead and also say which band realy got you into metal...oh and STAY METAL!!!

First I was into some nu metal like Disturbed, SOAD, and some others like Tool, Deftones, RATM and Slayer. My real introduction to metal was my friend in highschool who introduced me to Children of Bodom, Soilwork and In Flames. I saw Bodom live and from there I got into Death, Amon Amarth, and Emperor. Emperor got me started on black metal and I started listening to online radio and reading Listmania lists on Amazon to find bands. I've seen about 7 shows in the past year from 1349, Vader, Megadeth twice, Behemoth, Necrophagist, Kalmah and Amon Amarth, AA being my favorite live act so far. My cd collection is over 100, small by some standards but growing. I've got more shows coming up and the end of the summer, including Origin, Watain and Carcass. I'd say In Flames really got me into the genre. Currently I listen to everything from death, black and old school metal, and some thrash and doom. Up the irons!

A man on the move, and just sick enough to be totally confident.

I started listening to hard rock (Mainly AC/DC), and that gradually lead to metal. Black Sabbath and Slipknot were two of the first bands I got into.

I got into Metal Durring Elementry School Back when MTV played music (I feel old now) My dad would Play Master Of Puppets in the car while driving, my mom had Countdown to Extinction and would play that around me, And anytime Alice in Chains was on MTV (The video for agian got Alot of airplay back then) or on the radio I would turn it up. And it stayed that way untill High school since my folks didn't take me cd shopping and I had no exposer to the real heavy underground stuff. Even in Highschool I did not get much more exposer to heavy metal. The only other bands I got into were Preist and Maiden back then. I did buy Riegn in blood shortly after high school.

After I moved out my room mate introduced me to Bands like Gwar, Ministry,
S.O.D (Stormtroopers of Death) Hatebreed and the Misfits (Danzig). He made fun of me a litle for being so sheltered but hey I would too now. Then I started watching Headbangers Ball when it first came back and was exposed to the Likes of Amon Amarth, Lamb of God, ect.

Now Since Headbangers sucks due to the fact they play few vids and more commercials I end up spening my Saturday night on youtube Looking up King Diamond, Moterhead, and so much more. Metal and Punk have been good to me over the years and helped get me through some rough spots. Type O negative helped me grieve the Loss of my Grandfather (I don't Wanna Be Me and everything Dies) And the Misfits along with Black Flag always pick me up when I'm Depressed.

These Bands influinced me to start my on Band, but I do give credit to Hender for adding Karasine to the fire that was under my ass. When I saw the Video for Lips of an Angel (Roomates ex wife had it on VH1 one night and kept the remote.) I looked at my friend and said "We can do better than that garbage".
Metal Up your ass!!!!!!!

I was fairly neutral to heavy metal and music in general til I started listening to nu-metal bands like Korn and Slipknot when I was 14 or 15. I really started getting into metal when I was 18 and a friend of mine ,who wasn't exactly a metalhead, played me a few old Metallica and Sepultura songs on his walkmen and suffice to say I wen't out and got pretty much all they're old albums(even Morbid Visions/Bestial Devestation and Schizophrenia by Sepultura). From they're it just developed and I started listening to Slayer, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Kreator, Death, Motorhead, Morbid Angel, Venom, Overkill, Obituary. I don't listen to much Black Metal or many new bands like Opeth or Amon Amarth. I have some Lamb of God CD's which are great but thats the closest thing to a modern metal band I listen to. I also listen to a few of classic bands like Jimi Hnedrix, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

I geus I like the old school stuff from the 70's, 80's and early 90's the most. Right now I'm listening to a lot of Overkill and Napalm Death and I'll be seeing Iron Maiden for the first time in Assen(in the Netherlands, where I live)on August 16th which I'm sure will be awesome, and I'm getting "Utopia Bannished" by Napalm Death next week.

If anyone can reccomend me some bands that come close to the ones I've listed I'd greatly appreciate :)

Okay, here's how it went for me. In or around the 6th grade I was listening to rap and hip-hop, but soon the genre began to have a dull effect on me. I soon began playing video games, which was awesome but costly. It was around Christmas when I began to expect a massive load of video games, which ironically I received. However, there was something else in that pile, a CD by a band called AC-DC with the album "Back in Black". That was probably the first moment in my life where I was exposed to heavy (or proto) metal. Right now, my sense of music has surpassed even that of my friends, where I am listening to CANNIBAL CORPSE, BEHEMOTH, IRON MAIDEN, DEATH, EXODUS, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, AUTOPSY, SUFFOCATION, IMMOLATION and a lot more. But, as a whole, AC-DC's "Back in Black" was the genesis of me entering into the heavy metal genre.

Anyway, I want to try listening to NAPALM DEATH, skyhighatrist550, and I am wondering about the "Scum" album is it any good or is it too late to listen to that band since I am already into death metal and black metal?

I first heard The Nameless by SlipKnot in grade 7 so I got into them for a bit. The I got into System of a Down. The I pretty much got into thrash for a bit. When I changed schools in grade 10, I met this guy that was really into death/black and pretty much everything and he got me into some really cool bands.

The first band that got me into alternative musical selections was probably Nirvana back when i was a wee lad. From there, i started listening to grunge and "mainstream" bands like Nine Inch Nails. Yet i kept craving louder and harder music. Eventually i started using mIRC, which exposed me to the most depraved extreme metal there is, and i've been addicted ever since.

At 15 I started listening to Breaking Benjamin because of Halo 2's awesome song. Kept with alternative/hard rock for a while. Then I heard Five Finger Death Punch's premier with The Bleeding. Later on, a guy at work burned all these CD's for me. Devin Townsend's Ziltoid: The Omnicient, Come Clarity-In Flames, Children of Bodom with Hatebreeder, As I Lay Dying in Ocean Between us, Nevermore with Enemies of Reality, and an Opeth album. Metal rules.

11 years old, Metallica's The Black Album. That one album changed my life and turned me into a metalhead. Nuff' said.

Nevermore are incredible; old In Flames was excellent as well. And almost anything Townsend touches turns to gold.

All my life i loved rock music. I one day just downloaded songs under the Death Metal genre in Limewire. Ever since then i have always loved metal. I guess it was simply meant to be.

I got into metal back in the 80's... ya know, bands like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi...
I got into Metallica back in 1990 when I met this guy at school. He introduced me to Metallica. So, I got into bands like, Sepultura, and just progressed from there. People at school picked on me a lot for listening to that stuff, but I didn't give a crap. I'm now into bands like KALMAH, Amon Amarth, Strapping Young Lad, and basically every metal known to man, except for some new bands that have come out recently. I love a lot of music other then metal, too.

Well I remember I was flipping through the channels and I tuned into Headbanger's Ball and I heard the sound of it and I saw the fans headbanging and the guys playing the guitars fast and swinging their heads around and headbanging and I thought it looked really cool so I tried out headbanging and had some fun with it. Then a friend of mine gave me a copy of the Freddy Vs. Jason soundtrack telling me it's one of the few metal albums with some of the best bands and I really enjoyed it and I got hooked onto the music forever.

1990 with ...And Justice For All. We actually had a music teacher at my school who let us play music we liked for the first 15 minutes in class. Most of the time that meant 3 songs, but when it came to heavy metal, it was 2 at the most. And when a classmate of mine played ONE in that class, I was hooked.

He was cool enough to tape the album for me and after that I've owned every Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Sepultura, etc album. I was definitely always into trash. Never really got into glam or death, etc. Guns 'n Roses were in there somewhere too. And then of course later stuff as well.. Tool, Korn, SOAD, RATM ...

But i was never the kind of metal head that dressed metal, like they show in this documentary. I definitely wear black a lot and i do have long hair, but never leather or loads of metal tshirts. I did have a bunch of posters and i still have my metallica flag hanging on my wall, which i bought when i was 13.

When I was a teeny girl I looked at a magazine that had CoB on the cover and I giggled at how small Laiho looked.

And that's what got me into metal.

I was hanging around at the Games Workshop and you know how they are constantly pounding out Metal through the speakers in the shop. I heard one song that grabbed me. Wicker Man by Iron Maiden. So I researched it a bit then started getting into sub branches of metal. It expanded and expanded untill i got where I am today.

I got into metal at age 15. I was into mainstream music, but one night my cousin took me to see Apocalyptica, the first incredibly famous band to come to my city, Beirut, Lebanon. Before they played, there was a death metal band from my country playing. I've never seen such insanity before! It was amazing! The growling, the guitars, the smoke and flames, everything! Then Apocalyptica performed and blew my mind. After that I totally left mainstream and started listening to the music that eventually changed my life. Right now I'm 17, im a bass player in a thrash metal band and I'm gonna stay metal for years to come, it's just awesome stuff!
