i remember a twilight zone episode with the same plot, the earth moving closer to the sun.
perhaps the makers of this movie saw the same episode and then simply expanded on that story.

In that episode wasn't it all the dream of a woman with a high fever, and the earth was actually getting colder? I see your point, just want to know if I'm thinking of the same episode.
