I did not see this film in '05 when it came out. I'm watching it now on Sundance and I was struck by the religious imagery shown during this song because, having been introduced to the song via Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller, I always thought the Sisters of Mercy, insofar as the song was concerned, were prostitutes.

It's not about prostitutes or about nuns. Leonard himself said he wrote the song about two girls who fell asleep in his room.
