Listen Billyboy ---Darnellia has more hoop skills then a lot of men. She'd probably take you to the rack on your best day. You're a hater and probably can't play anyway. End of story

Women's Basketball...is quite different from Men's Basketball. But that doesn't take away from their skills. Sure the men's game is faster paced, they're physically stronger...but I'll have you know, that we had a College Slam Dunk Contest (We are a D1 school)...our Men's Team vs. Our Women's Team, and well...the Winner was a WOMAN named Nikki Wilson. So...c'mon. Women ballas have skill too. If you respect the game of basketball...you'd respect that as well.

Okay.
I was at a lot of these games, I have a friend on the team. Very close. I was even at the championchip game, and the WNBA may be boring, but there is not a doubt in my mind that these girls play with a lot of heart.

OH MY GOD

Who the hell CARES who's "better"? No one. Seriously. No one cares.

Does it *beep* matter? It's a movie. It's a good movie. It makes some money, pulls at some heartstrings, makes a nice point, has a few laughs.

Do people spend money to see the WNBA? Yes? Then good. Leave it at that. Do people spend money to see the NBA? Yes? Then good. Leave it at that.

And no, it doesn't really matter who makes MORE money. The point is they're both revenue streams, so they both get to continue onward and upward.

Where YOU personally spend your money is actually of no consequence. Marketing isn't built on one yahoo who needs to find every meaningless avenue to rant about how girls aren't as good as boys.

The last time that guy mattered was in, what, 3rd grade?

reply

Men and women play a totally different game.
Men (no offence), they are about who can do the best tricks and who can shoot the best.
Women, they are more strategic, it's not about who can dunk and who can't. Its about getting that ball in the basket.
All the movies that Hollywood are producing - men play basketball and girls are sluts who sleep with the team. Get real.

The major flaw in your shallow analysis about "who could take who to the hoop" - whatever the day - is that you have ignored (I assume because you aren't very knowledgeable about women players) the great women players like Cheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie (named by Kobe Bryant as the best female player ever and one of the 10 best players ever no matter the gender. She also once scored 101 points in one half of play in a high school game against the top high school team in LA county), Joyce Walker, Nera White, Dawn Staley, Cheryl Miller (her brother says she beat him 1 on 1 until he was finally able to block her shot and he further states that she was the best ALL-AROUND player he ever saw - even in the NBA), Cynthia Cooper, Chamique Holdsclaw and on and on is that you just don't know about them. Your problem, BillyBoy, is you just don't know much about basketball or you would be more thoughtful, circumspect and insightful in your musings here. BTW - many of the above players were especially known for their stellar play on their respective local playgrounds where real basketball is played! In her time Cheryl Miller was known as the BEST playground player in Los Angeles - male or female! I do believe she could take you to the hole and dunk you along with the ball.

How about Diana Taurasi in last nights game, 47 points, 8 three pointers, most NBA players would love to have a game like that. I would love to play in the WNBA, but unfortunatly my college is overshadowed in the scouting process. I agree that the men have a lot of talent, and are probably more talented than the women. But lets talk about the olympics. The biggest stage in an athletes career. Where was the US Mens basketball team?? huh??, oh yeah they won bronze after they lost to Lithuania, Peurto Rico and Argentina. Where as the women were 8-0. How about the womens hockey teams, Canada-gold, US-Bronze, and the mens Canada - 7, US - 8. So basically what I am saying is that male athletes may be more skilled and talented than the women, but when it comes to stages such as the olympics, the women will kick the mens ass every time. Prudhojc, don't forget that Kobe's father coaches Lisa Leslie.

BillyBoy, I resent that statement. I've played hockey with boys in very physical games, and I've still taken them down, even though I'm smaller than them. Maybe guys will always be physically stronger than women, because boys are physically structured to have more muscle mass (they have roughly 40% more muscle mass than women) but that doesn't mean girls can't out play boys. I've done it and my friends have done it, too. In womens sports- especially in hockey- women rely more on speed and quick thinking than men. In hockey, we are not allowed to body check. In that sense, we have to rely on our speed to catch the girl, not our size. I'm not saying guys aren't fast. They are. I've played with them. I know. Just don't generalize. It's wrong and quite sexist.

BillyBoy88 is a pathetic insecure loser looking for strong men to pump iron with him so he has a remote chance of beating girls at sports. End of story. Accept it.

Regarding the movie, I saw it last night and loved it. The players truly have heart, as does the coach. The film maker did a wonderful job telling the story and delivering the competitiveness on and off the court.

If you relate to losers like BillyBob88, chances are you'd waste your money on this movie. If you like a well-made documentary that tells an amazing story, Heart of the Game is worth the price of admission.

I think your full of crap. The WNBA just celebrated their tenth anniversary. They will always be around. By responding like you do you're setting a bad example bringing down women and being ignorant. We take enough crap by being mommies, sisters, successful women, and athletes without assclowns like you putting in your 2 cents. I dare you to a game, and I'll even wipe your tears for you when I smoke you, boy!! Have a nice day.

You really need to read the entire thread, dude. Seriously. And I believe the "same sport" is bastketball, which I believe is bouncing a ball and shooting through a hoop, whether you're male of female, it requires skill that some people just don't have!! And even if you knew how to play, you would probably still get shut down. Women can play just as well as men..we just don't get enough credit! Furthermore, I'd like to see your face when you ask Michael Jordan (only the greatest!) what he thinks of the WNBA, and he tells you what a sad, lonely person you are! Love ya like you were my own!! Peace.

I'm thinking that your a mysogynist threatened by successful women. Even if an NBA player could beat a woman from the WNBA he would still respect her skills and her heart! And just so you know basketball is the SAME sport regardless if it is played by opposite sexes. Furthermore, everyone knows Villanova isn't that good anyway so I can see why you wouldn't be "overly impressed" jk to my homegirls out there!! (this dude is just too much, I swear)

i know what you are saying, i used to think like you...that is until my new girlfriend at the time invited me to play with her and some of her players. I was floored by the skill that these players had. In my opinion, women play basketball how its supposed to be played; a more fundementally sound game. It is also my opinion that fundemental basketball is boring to watch, having played the mens game for so many years. We are used to high scoring games directed at embarassing the other player through fancy moves and overpowering the opponent. While a woman may be more knowledgeable about the intricacies of the sport, us men will almost always be able to rely on our sheer physical strength and athleticism to pull out a win. Aside from one on one, my girlfriend kills me in free throw contests between the two of us all the time. To answer anyone who says that i just suck, well that may be true as well; thus rendering my argument pointless.

[deleted]

So what? Do you really think that I watch women's basketball because I think they're better then men? No. I just like to watch a game that empowers women as athletes. I don't need to watch selfish showboating and a lack of a team game. Men's basketball has its fans, and women's basketball has plenty of its own.

The entire argument is moot - seriously. Leave it alone - there are rabid WNBA fans, as well as fans of the college game, and those who watch their mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends play. I don't need to be constantly reminded by these insecure individuals who have to point out how superior the mens game is in terms of pure physicality. Who cares? I enjoy the women's game for a million reasons. Let it go.

This movie was exceptional.

OK but its also wrong to say women play with more heart. I have a lack of skill and i play with a ton of heart. So many players in the NBA who have incredible skill play with all their heart.

I love this thread! Reminds me of a husband-wife fight, where husband tries to explain something to the wifey, using facts and whatnot, and the wifey responding with some stupid sht like "you don't love me anymore, it's all about the heart", LoL. Ok, so you're saying that women play with "heart", which is also saying that men don't, which wouldn't make much sense unless you're saying men are more intelligent and therefore use their brains instead of the heart (where I don't necessarily disagree with you).
That being said I'd argue that men are the ones playing their hearts out, just by the sheer (aforementioned) fact that their salaries are so much higher. once you reach the level of wealth where you don't need to worry about your next paycheck (or ferarri), you begin playing for the game itself, for the glory. since women get less money as one of the (smart?) females mentioned in this thread, they'd more likely try to play their best just to get that lucrative contract.
Do you know who LeBron James is? I can bet you ANYTHING that his High School team (with him in the lineup ofcourse) would beat any TOP women's COLLEGE TEAM any time, in fact I can go further and say that the probability of them beating a WNBA team isn't that bleak either. I mean COME ON GIRLS, you seriously think a team that CAN'T dunk can win a team that CAN? women play like men did in the 1920's, where all the players did was shoot and go for layups.
To sum it all up women can't do anything physical for me to enjoy (unless it's sex ofcourse!). all sports women participate in is boring to me (except naked mud-wrestling, or naked Anna Kournikova pictures sent via email!!!). why are they boring to me? it's like watching mentally (retarded!) challenged kids play, i mean yeah, they do have heart and all, but i can instead enjoy men, top players/athletes in THE HUMAN WORLD compete. i've seen kids in junior high school dunk for christs sake, i don't know why i'm typing all this anyway, coz i know some stupid person (probably a feminist) will respond with a comment that doesn't make sense and all the women will agree with them and disregard my post completely!!! ... by the way i'm a white guy that tries to play fundamental basketball, i'm not trying to break anyones ankles, just trying to win. i would like to think that i play with heart because i take every game too serious, every time i lose i pull a Bob Knight on my teammates... not sure if that's a good or a bad thing but i can't help myself ;)
oh and i'm about to watch this movie... wish me luck! (p.s. is it better than Sebastian Telfair's documentary?!?)

reply

Who started comparing NBA to WNBA in the first place? That's an entirely different issue altogether. Of course the NBA players would beat the WNBA players. So what? Who cares. The point of this thread and film is a story about a high school womens basketball team. It isn't about claiming women players can beat men players.

The Heart of the Game is just a great story and very well done documentary. It's an inspiring story to not give up in life. That's what this is; not a protest to claim women are better basketball players than men.

You show this film to Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, etc. and about any other NBA superstar and they would give this team, and coach their props. This film is strictly about the HEART of the GAME of basketball; it's about the sport, and tells a story about overcoming obstacles. It's not about comparing men and women players.

reply

Women do not have less ability than men in all sports. Women tennis players are about on the same level as the mens, and remember the US Womens Soccer team from a few years back? They didn't look like "retarded children".

Of course WNBA players can't match NBA players in terms of ability, but as I said on the other post, "Heart of the Game" isn't trying to compare, nor are they claiming in any way, shape, or form they can compete with the men. They are just doing their thing.

And men, and women BOTH have heart! It's not a gender thing; it's an individual thing. Look at guys like Kobe Bryant, Reggie Miller, Allen Iverson, Michael Jordan, Dewayne Wade, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, etc. and the list goes on. These are all great examples of NBA players, or teams that display great heart.

There are a lot of players in both men and womens sports across the globe that display extraordinary heart. It's not a gender thing.

Hi xxhasek99 , I'm doing research for my dissertation and your comments are fascinating. Would you mind clarifying a few of your opinions?

but i can instead enjoy men, top players/athletes in THE HUMAN WORLD compete.

Would you please explain what you meant by this sentence? As written, it seems to infer that women are not "human".

i know some stupid person (probably a feminist)will respond with a comment that doesn't make sense

Also, an explanation or elaboration of this statement would be helpful.

it's like watching mentally (retarded!) challenged kids play

Do you frequently watch mentally challenged chidlren at play and then find yourself judging them on "entertainment value"?

where husband tries to explain something to the wifey, using facts and whatnot, and the wifey responding with some stupid sht like "you don't love me anymore, it's all about the heart", LoL

Why do you refer to the man as "husband" yet the woman in the argument is derogatorily labeled "wifey"?

unless you're saying men are more intelligent and therefore use their brains instead of the heart (where I don't necessarily disagree with you).

Are you being facetious? If not could you elaborate?

Thank you, your responses will be most insightful.

>>> Second, again, I don't really care about heart

Are you out of your mind. That is one of the dumbest comments I've ever heard coming from a sports fan, (and the only time I've ever known a sports fan to say this). Beyond the fact that you have obvious issues with women athletes (what, did a girl once beat you out at something?), what kind of sports fan are you? Though, their games may not necessary be more entertaining then men's game, women athletes do tend to play with more heart, because (unlike to male athletes) they know they probably won't be making big money, become famous, or do commericals. In fact (depending on their sport) alot know they won't even be able to make a living at their sport, in America. That leaves purely playing for the love of their sport, and to prove themselves.
