Bizarre Coach Helps Make This A Great Story

The Heart of the Game is a very good sports documentary that throws in some life lessons as it goes on. The Coach (Bill Resler) is the one who really brings life to the whole story. His bizarre(kill and draw blood as part of the team cheer before the players go on the court would qualify as bizarre for me...lol!) methods are sometimes even questioned by his players, but by playing under his "system" and as a team, they get to where they want to be even after some tough losses during each season. Darnellia's personal story was very interesting and in the end was also uplifting however, I don't think her story alone would have made this as good a Documentary as it was. Bizzare methods and all, Coach Resler really brought life to all these girls and to this team. Sports fan or not, most people should be able to find something to relate to from this story. Worth spending your money on(imo)the DVD when it comes out.

I would hate that coach if my team played against him. If you look at it from the other perspective, theyre talking about drawing blood in a basketball game and banging on the lockers. Plus, they imported a player from another country and didnt even mention her even though they would not have won without her. Coach is a D BAG team is a BULLY TEAM. Not to mention they had to use a college age player to win also. Not against Darnellia at all, it wasnt her fault. Also, coach compromised good values at the beginning of the movie when he promoted Darnellia after missing practices. If she hadnt suited up he still would have played her.

You make some interesting points. The Coach's bizarre methods could spark negative reactions from anyone, even players on his team.

I can agree somewhat on Coaching without an offense. My High School Coach was very intense and could get physical with some of the players if they "dogged" it, but he was pretty set on his "stiff" formula, and I was the type of player who didn't really understand plays and just wanted to go hard on both ends of the floor. However, I think it is wise for a Coach to have at least one basic offense that the Team can go to from time to time. I have not played beyond High School, but since I've been out, I have played in different leagues and I understand more the value of organizing and setting plays, but I think if a Coach and his or her Team can find a balance between some set plays on offence and basically "Run and Gun", that is a good formula.(imo)

I agree that using too many set plays is not a good idea. I am currently a coach and we do not run "set" plays, but we do have an offense. The kids run the offense through reading the defense and making good, basketball decisions. My offense is a modified UCLA offense.

I just watched this movie last night at like 1 in the morning and didnt get to catch all of it. If I remember correctly, the Coach said he started coaching because his daughter wanted to play.....perhaps he doesn't have the knowledge or the background to develop an offense. That could be a reason why they did not run anything. Just from the few snippets of game film that were shown here and there, it looked pretty chaotic out there.

Also...sidenote....that poor girl's knees were absolutely painful to look at. This is my beef with the coach. If you are going to have your girls play scrappy and rough and tough, at least require them to wear knee pads. It might seem dorky and lame but it will save their knees and injury is less likely to occur.

They really should each play in a protective bubble...

He's the kind of coach who, if you are an opposing player or coach, you just love to really lay a shellacking on when you get the chance.

Notice they did lose a couple games by 25+ points during the course of the movie. Undoubtedly a few of the teams who heard a bunch of the "wolf pack eating the moose" stuff took great glee in being the moose feeding the wolf pack its lunch.
