Man in the sweater

I went to see this film with my family and we all loved it. My dad and I were debating who the man not in the monk's habit and with longer hair was. You see him in the scene where they are cutting hair and it focuses on him staring into the near distance. You also see him during the eucharistic procession, and again he is shown as one of the monk's close-up portraits when he looks directly into the camera. Is he a visiting monk?

He may be a postulate. That is a person just having entered the monastary. In this stage (lasting 3 months to a year) they learn to live like the rest of the monks but without having made vows. They also don't wear the garb of the monks.

Since carthusian monks doesn't allow non-carthusians to enter the monastery, I assume that men is Philip Gröning himself.
I have seen pictures of him after he finished Die große Stille and he looks alike that man.
Seems he lost some weight since then.
