Not attending harvard Med School because of money doesn't make sense.

Why didn't he just take out a loan?

Almost no one these days can actually pay for Medical or Dental school unless their parents are super rich. Pretty much everyone has to take out a huge loan.

Yeah he probably would have gotten a crappy interest rate because his Mom wouldn't have been a great cosigner but seriously, its Harvard, he would have easily been able to pay back that money plus interest later in life.

He also could have just joined the army or navy, and then they would have payed for it and he would have just had to serve four years after med school for pay back.

Idk, I just found it kind of stupid how he was acting like his life long dream was over because he didn't have 300 grand in the bank already.

Still a good movie, just bothered me.

300 000 is a lot of money. I don't know how things work in the States in detail, but as an average Joe I'd be nervous about borrowing THAT much money. What's *beep* up is how he can't get into a school despite being that gifted, because his wallet doesn't match his brain.

A young, uneducated boy is not going to get a loan like that.

Uneducated? He's trying to get money to go to HARVARD, pretty sure he's intelligent. Also people without the monetary resources go to Harvard or other Ivy League schools all the time. Unless you think EVERYONE at Harvard can afford to pay in cash every year, there must be a way all of those people pay.

The point is other people find ways so it's obviously possible...

Yes, that was one of many stupid things about this movie.
Not to mention the idea that there's only 1 person at Harvard who gets a scholarship when most people get at least partial scholarships due their huge alumni endowment.

OP, I was thinking the exact same thing. As you say, nobody has $300K lying around for medical school and everyone simply takes out a loan. And it's easy to get the loan since a lender figures, this guy's going to medical school, he'll be able to pay back the money easily. Add in HARVARD Medical school and the fact he graduated top of his class at MIT to the mix and every bank in Boston would be out there offering to lend this guy the money.

I'm watching the movie now and I can't get past the dumb premise. Seriously, a top grad from MIT going to Harvard Medical is going to easily get a loan AS PRETTY MUCH EVERY OTHER STUDENT THERE NEEDS TO DO and will pay it off within a decade given his high earnings (which are nearly guaranteed for graduates of those schools).

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Even rich people take loans because they're generally interest-free until graduation.
