So Why Do They Keep Going To The Same Casino?

And, why the hell are they hanging out together outside the casino in Vegas and checking in together? Oh yea, then there wouldn't be a story. Also, AC is an hour flight from BOS. They should be going there too.

reply

Cause they're dumb. Just like Spacey was saying all throughout the movie. Plus Vegas has a better night club feel than AC to attract all the club goers to see the movie.

I wondered the exact same thing. Surely if you're running a scam like that you'd spread yourself around. No shortage of casinos in Vegas. Why return to the one that's on to you? *shrug*

Early in the movie Rosa stresses the importance of visiting a range of casinos and using disguises. But then for the vast majority of the movie, they appear to do the opposite apparently with Rosa's blessing. It didn't really "add up" (small pun intended).

That's exactly my thoughts. But they had to make the movie more catchy and watchable, vamping up thematic elements and such so it's a box office success. Remember, profit is any movie's number one goal.

I think all the casinos were on to them after a while. I suspect the real team worked them all. Probably in the movie it was easier to just show how one casino responded.

The problem is that if you start to eliminate casinos that are on to you, soon you won't have one to play in.

I thought they might have kept returning to the same casino because they did not yet have the facial recognition software that detects card counters and cheaters. They definitely should have played at other casinos and/or cities. There are casinos in Atlantic City, Reno and many other cities. Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut is huge and about a two hour drive from Boston.

You could be right and I naturally agree with your second point.

The thing is Rosa says one thing early on in the movie, which then judged by what we see, is ignored for much of the rest of the film....I reckon just to create drama. I bet it was nothing like that in the book (which I obviously haven't read).

They weren't going to the same casino.

Laurence Fishbourne works in a surveilance room that monitors multiple if not ALL casinos. That's why one of the lines he speaks in the movie is, "there aren't many employers left to fire us". That means he has multiple employers. He is not working for only one casino.

He even talks about which casino got hit last night the hardest. That's further proof he's overseeing multiple casinos. Once he finds out which one Sturgess is in, he heads to that casino to catch him.

The counters have a new identity and look for each casino they visit.

What flumoxed me more is this...

Something I found either really dumb or really impressive is the climax of the film at the end. Spacey and Sturgess split up, each trying to escape their persuers (the security team chasing them). Spacey gets into a limo and discovers that the guys in the front seat are the ones chasing him. He fell straight into their trap.

Now what are the odds that they predicted he would enter that very car? Of all the ways he could have ran, of all the other cars he could have got into, they knew he would end up exactly there, and go into that very car?

reply

My take on that scene was that they had a limo waiting, and that he thought that was the one he was hopping into. As we found out a few minutes later, the others were setting him up all along anyway, so they probably tipped off the casino guys that that was the car he would be looking for.

"Laurence Fishbourne works in a surveilance room that monitors multiple if not ALL casinos."

I think MGM owns a half dozen casinos or more, so it is quite feasible that he is on security detail for MGM or Wynn or whoever owns a lot of casinos.

I only saw them in the Planet Hollywood casino.

I was wondering the same thing, why they went to only one casino.

As for going to Atlantic City, you are probably too young to know that they did not always have gambling. Do a search on when gambling was made legal for there.
