It's just not the same

I just saw this for the first time. It's an okay cartoon, but it's just not the same was what folks such as myself grew up watching.

reply

I agree, I like to watch the cartoons I grew up with. GI Joe has now shifted its focus away from the unique characters that made it so interesting. Now the focus is on a handfull of characters with robots being the main focus. Another cartoon down the drain.

reply

yeah

reply

I like it

reply

It has this juvenile feel that the old stuff just didn't have. Despite episodes with giant vegtables, ghosts, alternate worlds, and mechanical sea serpants, the old cartoon had a more mature feel.

reply

BTW: Six Sigma is a corporate program used by many companies to increase efficiency in the workplace, eliminate redundancy redundancy redundancy redundancy, and find ways to essentially put more money in the pockets of rich bastards who already have too much wealth and power.
So it's fitting the names are almost identical, and that the Joes work for the UN - Doing the dirty work for some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world.

"It has this juvenile feel that the old stuff just didn't have. Despite episodes with giant vegtables, ghosts, alternate worlds, and mechanical sea serpants, the old cartoon had a more mature feel."

What the hell are you talking about? The original series was just as lame, it's just that the new one is a different kind of lame. Don't make me form a list.
Of course, you're probably bound to like it less because the part of you that the original appealed to has grown up, and it now probably takes a lot more to get you hooked because you no longer have as strong a connection to that part of your personality. Ever notice how all the "grown ups" almost invariably hate the new versions of the stuff they once loved? That's big reason why. That, and also because it reminds them of what they lost about their childhood, and that they can't go back.
Reminiscing is powerful that way.

I'll tell you exactly why I hate the new series:
I was staying with a friend for the weekend, and I woke up early. I thought, "Let's see what Saturday morning cartoons are like now."
I started watching this series and thought, "It's Anime, or American Anime, or whatever, so it can't possibly be that good. But I'll still watch."
Then, I see this little white dude try to blow up a door with about 40 pounds of high explosives. The result was little more than a scorch mark that would annoy Cobra Commander's interior decorator.
So some token black strong man (because black guys can't possibly have intelligent roles [/sarcasm]) gives the little white comic-relief guy a speech about how explosives won't win the day, and how it takes a more "finesse" or some sort of crap.
So the black guy's knuckles emit a green light, he charges the door, and punches through it on one blow.
There's all sorts of things wrong with that. The old one was lame, but that little scene proved the new one to be downright stupid.

I immediately turned the channel... after checking out Scarlet and The Baroness' Jailbait ass for just a moment longer.

reply

Thanks for the BS psych lesson A**Hole. I hate this show too.

From "the black guy".

reply

How does anything I said make me an a**hole, and how does you being "the black guy" have anything to do with what I said?
How the hell does anything I said justify your comment?

Unless of course you're one of those angry black guys, who's identity is nothing more than being pissed off at the rest of the world just because you're too stupid, too much of a loser, or too into 'DA THUG LYFE, BIOOOOOTTCCHH' to get out of 'DA HOOD.' So because of your own life's failings, you in turn decide to take that anger out on everyone else, and seeing other people comfortable and making something of their life is a reason for you to get pissed off. Are you one of those guys who throws his arms up in the air, cocks your head, and screams as if your mouth was full of cotton "WHATCHOO LOOKIN' AT, MUTHAFOCKER" just because a non-black person smiled and nodded at you? That's the only reason I can think of for you to be so hostile at my comment - because of your miserable failings.
If that's the case, do us a favor and go get yourself shot over a drug deal, or get sentenced to Death Row over sticking some one for a pair of Nikes.

However that's not the case, since we all know black people can't use computers except in movies [/Sarcasm], so all I can say is shut up you over-privelidged, stupid, skinny white boy.

reply

Its cuz they're using that stupid japanese animated design.
The original characters looked like Americans.

If there be a god...than hide from him our most evil enterprise!

reply

OK now that all that has been sorted out... This show is doing terrible with rateings anyhow. I predict that this will fall the same way GI Joe Extreme went. What? You don't remember GI Joe Extreme? May be a good thing if you think this show is crap LOL.

reply

I just got done watching an episode and I thought it was actually really good.

I only have vague memories of the old GI Joe, so I can't give a very accurate comparison, but Sigma Six stands on it's own as good cartoon.

First off, Cobra Commander seems more true to life to his dictator role. In the old GI Joe, I remember him being a 1-dimensional "crazy bad guy." Now, he's a charismatic leader, but not a great strategist. In the episode I saw, he ignored his military advisers and instead opted for an all-out assault, which reminded me of Hitler. Of course, he paid for it.

The robot designs are really slick and the way the 2D artwork is given a 3D feel through computers looks really nice.

The episode I saw maintained the tension the whole way through. It managed to pack a ton of action into the 23 or so minutes it was allotted.

I didn't get to see a lot of Snake-Eyes, but he looked cool as ever and he's going to clash with another ninja in next week's episode.

So anyway, stop hating. It's unfair to say that anything that doesn't invoke your nostalgic feelings sucks.

You mean "Stop having an opinion?"
Umm... no. I think I'll keep my opinions and continue to justify them.
I thought it sucked for reasons far beyond it's failure to invoke nostalgia.

reply

This show is corny! It's even cornier than the original cartoon. And I'm not saying this because I grew up watching the original. It's just bad, and I think it's >John Touhey's< fault; He's the hack writer and translator. The character designs were good and the animation was decent, but the writing is awful. And the opening theme song..........OMG! That was so horrific, I just wanted to rip my ears off. It sounds like a 7 year old wrote the Lyrics.

And please, don't give that BS about me not liking it because of my age. Justice League Unlimited is leaps and bounds ahead of this. Too bad they canceled it. I think they should keep the animation studio(Gonzo) and get Paul Dini and Bruce Timm(JLU) to do the writing. Don't get me wrong, Sigma Six is better than most kid shows that come out nowadays, but the writing needs improvement. The Snake Eyes vs. ?, I can't believe I forgot his name. Anyway, it was a cool fight.

Hollywood? You wish!!- http://www.gofishpictures.com/casshern/

reply

The other one is named Stormshadow...and i agree with you about the dialog of the show.

reply

I agree with scaperrat 1. If you look at Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's history in cartoons it is pretty fantastic story wise and visually. They have had a long and fruitful history that started back in the ealy 90's with the Batman animated series. They consistently turned out good stories from Batman to Batman Beyond and JLA and JLU. It would be nice to see more of their original work than always having to watch imports for good story telling.

reply

If you go back you'll see that Paul Dini wrote an episode of GI Joe called "Jungle Trap."

reply

Yes, be sure to keep those self-important opinions about a cartoon. If you add shipping & handling, you can mail them away for a free "Refridgerator" William Perry action figure, ala flag-points.

reply

They need to ditch Cody.
AND WHERE ARE THE FEMALE ACTION FIGURES! I WANT SIGMA 6 SCARLET AND JINX, DAMMIT!!

reply

I was not im[ressed with this show. When I finally had the chance to get a saturday off of work, I thought to myself "yeah finally get to see what kind of saturday monrning cartoons kids nowadays watch. When I was a kid, we had Ninja Turtles (the new show is pretty good) Batman the Animated Series (new show is garbage), and GI Joe (this one is pretty bad). I loved the old GI Joe shows, even the enviromentalist show that they had out was pretty good... but I hate the japanime feel to this. I only saw one episde where Snake Eyes and his pupils were being trailed by Stormshadow, and the entire show consisted of choppy fight scenes. Why did they include Mechs? This isn't Gundam Seed. I don't even recal seeing Cobra Commander or Destro... my two favourite baddies, not to mention Serpentor... loved that mini series when he was created from history's greatest bad guys. But this just leaves a sour taste in my mouth, one that makes me not want to turn it on should I see it on the guide list.

reply

This show is so bad, it makes me want to rape Michael Jackson.

"I'm a vegetarian, dammit!!"

reply

My one real problem with this show is the characters the show is so action driven that the character work is lost, I mean there does need to be action, but not every two seconds, that's what I liked about the original show you have to have a balance between the two

reply

I agree with the above poster.^

However, I must say I got sucked in, if only because I'm a nostalgic idiot. It's pretty corny, has way too much action, and is far too fast paced, but the fact that it has "GI Joe" branded on it makes me enjoy it a bit. Maybe it's just because Cobra Commander looks so badass.

It's a very mediocre show and in no way lives up to the original, but I sort of dig it.

reply

The new show is horrific.

Whoever said the new Cobra Commander is badass clearly hasn't watched the original. And even if he had did he watch all the shows in subtitles.

The show has some truely TERRIBLE voice acting which is really sad because the original had some fantastic voices.

As a child i would have favourite characters mainly because of the way they sounded.

Beachhead with his southern accent and dry but professional sense of humour. Anyone remember his line "Sureee....When they buried him they left his radio on" (Arise Serpentor Arise)

Watch the original and try and listen out for a voice actor who is trying to sledgehammer what he is saying into your ears like the new one does. By that i mean that the way the original characters sounded it would be like a realistic (as cartoons can be) conversation and you actually sensed a community spirit....EVERYONE could be told apart from one another.

New one is like "HA..HA..HA..SOON..I SHALL...TAKE OVER...THE...WORLD HA HA HA!!"

Its boring and its lazy vocal work.

And why is Beachhead a surfer "dude"? Oh yeah...less taxing on the brain.

I like anime but i truely think that this was not a show to "anime" up. Scarlet i no longer think of as a tough, intelligent woman who is very cabable of holding her own; Sigma Six makes me think of Scarlet as a 14 year old, Bubblegum Crisis Esq impatient girl who has been "chosen" to join GI Joe like a Ancient Anime Battlemech from the Antares System always chooses a panic stricken, skinny dweeb from "high school" to be the next savior of the universe.

Give it back to Sunbow.

And before people say "Sunbow animation is rubbish compared to anime!" Please learn that they are two different styles of Animation and that your probably thinking of the 1980's style Sunbow (Please note that if you compare Manga/Marvel/Anime/Sunbow styles in the 80's the 80's style is much more realistic and detailed.

Sorry for ranting but it does annoy me when people say that "Anime is a superior style of animation" because they are simply wrong. Ask Japanese Anime companies to try DC/Marvel style and they would probably not want to draw complex faces and rather concentrate on the triangle mouths and DOA eyes.

Anyone to tie this rubbish up:

Vocals: Terrible
Animation: Good....but not suited to source material

Thats all thats worth commenting on.

p.s

The old Laser sounds ROCKED!!! "PEW PEW PEW!!"

reply

This show is worse than G.I. Joe Extreme and I didn't think that was possible.
The animation is really "cutesy anime", it doesn't feel like G.I. Joe at all, It feels like I'm watching "Ah! My Goddess", I would almost say it has a 'feminine' look to it. And that doesn't suit G.I. Joe.

4KidsTV, the king of crappy cartoons.

well in my opinion the original GI JOE was lame this one is much better.
RBD and Timbiriche 4life...

reply

^Good thing your opinion isn't actual fact..

reply

So apparently I'm one of the few existing people on Earth that likes this show.

I grew up with G.I. Joe, but I still enjoyed Sigma 6. I agree that its not as good as the 80's series, and that it focuses a bit too much on action, but i still find it entertaining. Also I love the art and character designs (Scarlett and Jinx look damn sexy), not to mention this version's Cobra Commander is much more badass than he ever was in the 80's version. (I'll admit it I loved the part where he kicks the Joes asses in "Zeus: Part 1.")

But then again I like anime. Go fig. I think people hate the show so much because they believe the two don't belong.

reply

I like the new theme song but the show SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

The show is awesome!!! Just because the style changes, doesn't mean the heart of the show changes! Also, the team will have more fan favs coming up, like firefly and Grand Slam!!! Also, this is a revamp, just like Batman Begins. People were skeptic about that movie too, but then they warmed up to it and look at it now! BTW Scarlet is hotter in this version, Baroness too. And most of the costumes look cool, maybe better than the fatigues of the classic!

YO JOE!!!

reply

This show is good, but some of the dialogue and jokes are stupid.Zartan is my favourite character for sure.He just looks so cool!!!What really bugs me is the fact that Cobra never has any real victories.Every time they have a victory,Sigma Six comes along and ruins it.Me and my sister absolutely LOVED Cobra when we watched the original series.Cobra is missing a few characters(Zandar,Zarana)and soldiers(Vipers,Tele-Vipers,etc.)which is the one thing I don't like about the team in this t.v. series.

I'm sure that's what fans of the original comic book said when they saw the 80's show.
