Curious about the hand grenade

I watched the second (and thankfully final) part of this risable show last night on Sky TV in the UK and while I'm very bitter about the two hours of my like that I will never, ever, get back I do have one question mainly to satisfy my curiosity.

Oliver said that his life was saved after a Chinese sniper hit his grenade when he was disembarking from a landing craft, shouldn't the grenade have exploded then and there?

reply

Haven't seen it, know very little about grenades but I'm pretty sure they need a charge to detonate them. When you pull the pin you light a fuse that ignites the charge. Possibly it ignites the explosive itself but based on my knowledge of explosives (a lecture at school aged 17 from a man with only 2 fingers on one hand.) it probably requires a quite high temperature to set off the explosion. Hitting a grenade with a bullet would probably just knock it out of your hand.

reply

Pulling the pin doesn't ignite the fuse. The pin just prevents the handle from accidently being released. Releasing the handle starts the fuse.

Too much, too soon, too long, too strong, too many,
to fix.

It was a "Thermo-Nuclear" hand grenade.
Couldn't you tell by the massive explosion it caused? LOL
Hand grenades generally don't have that much explosive in them. Just enough to blow apart the outer pineapple skin that sprays shards of metal.
This thing when up like a pound of C-4. The CGI fire made me want to puke also.
Such a bad, bad movie.

Remember the tunnel was filled with gasous fumes, so when the grenade exploded it set off a chain reaction of flames.

reply

Well, it was bad, but it wasn't THAT bad.

They DID explain multiple times throughout the movie that there was some kind of flammable gas that was a by-product of the fungus. Don't you think a grenade of ANY sort could ignite that gas?

I'm not a fan of thermonuclear grenades - I use the term fairly often myself, but this doesn't fit the description.

If it was an impact granade it would be plausable (some have nitro glycerine primers), but a timed release model would probably just scatter and throw material around.
