Idealistic hippy rubbish .....

This made him look what a lot of people suspected he was, a drug addicted hippy who spouted off a load of idealistic rubbish about world peace. I have long suspected he was a closet communist after writing 'Imagine' and I stand by that.

Nobody is denying his musical talents but in all the time he spoke of peace did he ever visit any of these war zones ? Did he ever put on a concert in a country devastated by war to raise the morale of the people ? No.

He is an even bigger hypocrite than The Irish guy who is the lead singer of a band made up of 1 letter and 1 number. (Best not name him for libel reasons). He runs a charity that actually gives no money to the poor. All the charity's stated aim is is to raise awareness which means all the money goes into the back pocket of the trustees. I remember chuckling when the Irish Govt said if people like him paid their tax share rather than have it all off shore perhaps they could do more to help.

Stick to making music and keep your noses out of world affairs where the naivity shown is quite staggering.

I like Lennon. He was a very talented man with very deeply-seeded insecurities and a strong desire to matter.

He was one of our best celebrities, even if he was a terrible activist. A complete non-intellectual, who nonetheless wanted to be one.

He deserves neither the scorn nor the adoration he gets for the politics. Yes, he put himself out there, but we are the ones that decided that he be something more than ordinary man. American media sensationalized the Lennon celebrity and continues to do so.

I think the blame should go there. Lennon just rode the tide.

He was deeply dissatisfied with his own songwriting for a long time. Fabulism lost its spark (sadly). He became excited with politicized art, partly due to Yoko. That was a mistake, but no one knew that at the time. It seemed like a good idea then; you had to be there.

In spite of everything, the art still had power. Maybe not in terms of fostering sweeping political/economic change. But definitely in terms of making people feel more in control of their own lives. Lennon gave them a voice. Just don't expect Nietzsche. He was a fairly ordinary guy. That's the charm.

Interesting that you consider world peace to be "rubbish" -- how terrible to believe in something more than war & hatred, and to want to do something about it! And John Lennon had as much right as any other human being to speak his mind & stand up for his beliefs ... and how thankful I am that there have been people idealistic enough to strive for change & improvement rather than simply settling for the status quo.
