Is this any good

Just wondering if this is any good, I have heard that it isn't like his usually films.

reply

In my opinion it is a terrible copy (steal?) from Davis Lynch's Mullholland Drive. It is the worst Kitano's work, may be his cycle as an autor (actor?) is finished. The theather scene with the worm was enough for me. It is as bad as good is Hana-Bi one of his previous films.

reply

I'm a big fan of Lynch (as well as Kitano), and maybe I'm a little off here,
but I just kept thinking Fellini's 8 1/2 (which to me is a good thing).

It also reminded me a little bit of Sabu's work, but not so much of David Lynch. Except maybe for the not-so-narrative segments of the movie.

I liked it a lot,
I was afraid it would be a lot like Getting Any? which I don't like very much.

Hana-Bi must be one of the best pics he's made though,
and it is totally different.

reply

I loved it, but alot of people dont like it.

i really found it hard to watch...
i couldnt understand where it was going and what the storyline was at times.
so this movie confused me and as with the other guy, the catterpiller part did it for me too.

in my opinion it just looked like a load of clips randomly shot and randomly edited.
one guy died then hes not dead...?
:s

really confusing is all i can say...

reply

Having watched it for the third time I THINK I understand what's going on. Is it any good? Well, yes, it is. Is it confusing as all hell? Yes! I can understand it not appealing to those who liked, say, "Hana Bi" or "Kikujiro" but please bear with it. Hopefully you'll get something out of it... As for what I think is going on, I'll keep it to myself - if I'm horribly wrong, I'd rather not know!

looks good, cant see why people think lynch though. I think thats the trouble with doing those layered psychological movies, its inevitable that comparisons will be made. Its lynchs terrain but i believe in ol takeshi his movies have a wonderful sense of subtlety and pace, and hes a bit of a lunatic so his explorations of his psyches gotta be cool. Where can i get this?

reply

It certainly 'feels' a lot like a Takeshi movie. It's only in the way the 'story' unfolds that it's different.

You wouldn't want him to keep making the same movie would ya? :)

So is it any good?

Yes, it's a Takeshi movie!

No, it's rubbish, my head hurts!

No, it's non-linear and therefore a rip-off of Fellini and Godard ('cos ya know, other people aren't allowed to mess with film conventions..)

Yes, it's a masterpiece!!

Plus a fair few other answers. Go watch it and judge for yourself.

gaep - said In my opinion it is a terrible copy (steal?) from Davis Lynch's Mullholland Drive.

I love both of the films and I can honestly say the only thing they have in common with each other is the fact that they both leave it up to the viewer to fill in the blanks in the story. Apart from that they are completely different.

its funny how so many people say its a rip-off from several movies very different from each other. that says a lot about this movie. since this is a movie about movies and its very abstract each person will see what the film reference they want to see. like a rorshack test but instead of an abstract image its a movie. some see mulholland drive, others see a godard movie, i saw the movie perfect blue in it. what will you see?

you're asking will you like this movie. that depends on how open-minded you are and how wide is your attention span.

reply

How can you be a fan of Fellini and Lynch at the same time? Isn't that like being a fan of Marlon Brando and Peewee Herman at once? Just messin with you, j!

To the OP, this film is definitely unusual. It's not as story driven as Takeshi's other works, it's more like a hodgepodge of interesting moments.

"Takeshis" is to Takeshi Kitano what "Yume" is to Akira Kurosawa. That's the best way I can put it.

reply

I don't understand why ppl keep telling that this film is not good and its not like his usual film

Probably it becuz he did not appear to be a yakuza (like his usual roles) and the storyline go extremely difficult to understand. It is hard to realize where is the real world and where is dream. I have a wrong timing subtitle so its double difficult for me to understand. But I watched it again and I think I get something out of it. Its 100% Kitano film.

You should watch it again and u will see what I mean. Because every person has different idea and vision, I probably keep my opinion a secret
Watch it and see it urself
