American soldiers?

what is the meaning or relationship with the soldiers at the beginning and end of the film?

I haven't seen all of his films. Perhaps these scenes are paying homage, or have personal meaning?

Thanks.

I guess it relates to his part in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence.
But real the meaning of it, I wouldn't know.

maybe it's related to his box office failure with Brother?

He said in an interview that as he was born after WW2 he grew up with American soldiers around and they were the guys that gave you sweets and chocolate and gum and were friendly, like the nice guy that runs the cornershop or a friendly neighbour would be, and so to have one glare at you, such a usually friendly person, was the worst thing to happen. So he said that he thinks it was a memory of that kind of feeling that the soldier represents.

I saw the soldier as a beginning of the decay of japanese culture/showbiz through western influences, a theme that is present throughout the movie.

It may have personal meaning, I don't know about his life.
