Two thumbs way down!

People keep saying how great Donnie Yen is, and they're right. He is great. The fight scenes in this movie are awesome. Too bad you have to sit through about 90 minutes of talking just to see 20 minutes of action. The story sucked, the characters were uninteresting, and the ending was ridiculous! Hopefully Flashpoint will be better. I've seen great things from Donnie Yen on You Tube. It's just a shame that this snorefest didn't give him much of a chance to showcase his talent. I am sorely disappointed!

I found it pretty entertaining all the way though, Sammo hung was great to watch in various scenes, so was Jackie wu. the two final fight scenes were easily the best point of the film

reply

I think SPL is considerably better than Flash Point. FP has a more satisfying ending but everything else in between is straight out of a bad Dolph Lundgren movie sitting at your local Blockbuster video shelf.

I like the majority of dolph's movies that i've seen. At least he doesn't waste time getting to the butt-kicking. Ever seen showdown in little tokyo? There's a fight like every five minutes. Let's face it, nobody sees donnie yen or dolph lundgren films for great acting or plot development. We just want to see action, and that's where spl failed to deliver. The fights that were there were great; revolutionary even. The way he incorporated mma into hong kong choreography was nothing short of astounding. My question is," WHY COULDN'T THE ENTIRE MOVIE HAVE BEEN LIKE THAT!" I mean, seriously . . .

The acting and the story weren't strong enough for spl to stand as a good crime drama. The only strength this film had were the action scenes, and there just wasn't enough of them. Then again I did make the mistake of watching the english dubbed version. Maybe subtitles would be better.

The movie was very entertaining and the two Inspectors came off as equals with different strengths. The Action sequences were awesome and the fact that they did not come too often simply added to its being special. I would hate it if the movie was all action.

True, the plot is a little thin but the script was still expertly executed.

reply

Yeah, I'm gonna have to check it out again in the original chinese or whatever.

We had to wait a good 30 mins before seeing an actual fight in SPL but when we finally saw it, it was great. A Dolph Lundgen movie is action-packed, I'll give you that, but the action is terrible! Showdown In Little Tokyo is a perfect example of that. An absolute piece of trash. What a shame that Brandon Lee had to be stuck right in the middle of that mess.

How dare you?! SILT is great! Way more entertaining than SPL! Dolph's a lousy actor and nowhere near as good at fight choreography as Donnie Yen, but it's still a better movie than boring old SPL. I've seen SILT many times and will always watch it if it's on. It's Dolph Lundgren at his crappy best! :P

I hope you're joking.

No. I'm not. I like Showdown in Little Tokyo better than I liked SPL.

PS What's up with that quote you end all your responses with? Are you gay? Not that I'm judging by the way. Just curious.

Yeah, Lance Bass is totally gay. Huh! Huh!

reply

I have to be honest SILT was pretty bad... it had potential to be good with those two but it was bad.

everyone groaned when Brandon Lee said something like "I want to eat raw fish off of naked chicks"
And when Tia Carrere said "This time I heard you come."

reply

Yeah man. Showdown in Little Tokyo was a little meh. I wanted more fighting. Like in the Punisher. Ninjas and Yakuza.

I liked SPL better, but the movie still had its flaws.

It felt like a two hour movie because of its pacing. I then found out it was 90 minutes. There's about an hour and 20 minutes of talking and character development, then everyone just about dies anyway.

If it weren't for the last two fight scenes people would say this movie sucked.

Showdown in Little Tokyo is retarded. Dolph sucks and Brandon is overrated in my opinion. He was alright but he was no where near as good as his dad, donnie yen, or even Dan Inosanto. SiLT has some of the worst dialouge I have ever heard in a film, in contrast SPL had a great story and characters as well as intense action. It's supposed to be a crime drama with action, by your logic than the Police Story series sucks too since they don't have non stop action either.

Because some people have more intelligence than to make a brainless, idiotic action movie. I see this movie as a perfect action film, much like "Hulk", "Taken", or "The Dark Knight". The director is simply oozing with talent. "We just want to see action." Well, I just want to eat feces out of a toilet sometimes, I don't want to bother with good, healthy food, I'd rather just crap and eat it. Does that make sense to you? Because that is exactly your immature and foolish attitude.

Winged freak... terrorizes... wait till they get a load of me. Ooooooop. Oop. Ha ha ha ha ha!

The fighting was excellent! Donnie is talented when it comes to fight choreography, he knows what the audience wants. The long cuts look fantastic compared to hollywood editing MA fights until its unrecognisable.

That said the rest of the movie sucked. If the story was engaging the movie would have worked. Too bad all the great fighting is gone to waste on a crappy story. I think its the director's fault, a more capable director would have made this a good movie.

I guess you have to be Asian/Chinese to truly appreciate the excellence of this film. As much as this was advertised as action/crime drama/thriller film, this film was way deeper than just a few fight scenes.

The story is about karma, what the Chinese believes in. You have this group of cops who could never put a crime boss away, so they went the wrong way. Chan decided the swap evidence and intimidate witness to try to frame Wong, taking all his men down the dark path with him , and they all paid for the wrong doings with their lives. Ma came in as the guy who wanted to do things the right way, but got sucked into the dark side, and he too paid for it with his life. Wong's wrong doings also indirectly caused his wife and his only son's death. So like the quote in the movie, "God is fair. There are consequences for wrong doings".

I felt for the characters, particularly Chan's men and Ma, because they were sucked into the bad things. They were cops, they were supposed to uphold the law, not break them.

Too bad so many people only comment on the fight scenesand that the story stunk. In my opinion, the story was great and thought-provoking.

Exact same reason I love the ending of this movie. I felt it was a strong story. Well this is why so many different movies exist. different tastes for everyone

Honestly, the action scenes weren't even that good compared to other movies - very overhyped. And the directing was atrocious. There was a lot of bush-league lighting and shot selections. And oh yeah, the editing. These are normally things that don't factor into my rating / opinion of a movie, but they really stuck out.

I actually liked the story. But I don't think it was told effectively.

Please tell us all the movies with far superior martial art choreography? This film has two scenes that would be in the top 50 of the best 1 v 1 fights for most martial art film fans.
