Ending?

I had no idea what to expect from this movie and I was really blown away by its simplicity and beautiful storytelling. What a great movie! However, I wasn't sure what to think of the ending. Do you think the children survive the giant wave?

reply

i don't think they wanted to survive. i think they just wanted to get away. :(

It's always darkest before...the dawn.

reply

Nopes. They deliberately stand there. To get swept away by the wave. I was stunned when I saw it. Kids that age do know how to take such steps? It was with such an understanding that both nod at each other and run towards the ocean to get drowned.

reply

yep, they definitely did it on purpose; i thought they were about to jump in and the man with long hair noticed them yet did nothing to stop it after witnessing their love for one another and their parents' flaws. This is an amazing universally accurate film as the parents put their unhappy lives before their own children's happiness.

reply

so what happened to them in the ending? I thought they just wanted to get away from their parents. I didn't think they wanted to get themselves drowned.

reply

I think they'll be eaten by the giant waves. But whether they survive or not, the story just shows how selfish parents are sometimes. At the end of the scene, they only cared about fighting with each other and ignored the children completely. This was just only a minute after re-uniting. The ending is so powerful.

reply

The ending have been left open on purpose. You don't really see what happened to the kids, just that their silhouettes fades away at the end of the movie.
It's not clear if they dies or just got wet and later were "rescued" by their parents.
It's up to you to decide what happened to these charming kids.

reply

Obviously, considering the stupidity of their elders, they wanted the ocean to swallow them.

A sentiment felt by many Cubans, I'm sure.

If we are to be brothers, let us be brothers for life, die together.

reply

It's based on Romeo & Juliet, so if you know how those two ended, you have an idea how this movie is expected to end...but like one person here said, I think the Director wanted also to leave it open to your imagination.

reply

Cuba has one of the highest suicides rates in the world.

reply

Stop it with your naivete. Come on, do the directors have to spell out everything to you? There's nothing ambiguous about the ending. This film is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Put on your thinking caps!

reply

This film is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
Incorrect.
