Pretentious fraud or highly original? I honestly don't know.

This movie made no sense to me.

Some of the shots were beautiful but, beyond that, there is really nothing I can say about the film.

Am I just not smart enough to understand this film?

Or is this movie just a bunch of nonsense?

What can you tell me?

reply

Its a personal film of the director.
About nature, life and memories.
It is supposed to transmit a feeling and for everyone to understand it diferently.

reply

Pretentious? I hate the misuse of that word.

It's an incredibly humble, calm and inviting film if anything.

reply

I had to double-check the definition to see if I used the word correctly:

>> Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

So, yes, I chose the right word for my question.

Pretentiousness isn't exclusive to high-art -- there can also be a pretentiousness around avaunt-guarde art, as well.

Maybe I've been to too many film festivals! ;-)

I saw this film on DVD but I could just imagine mingling with the director, glass of white wine in hand, at a film festival with people singing the praises about this movie while he fishes for funding of his next film.

I'd keep silent but inside I'd be asking -- "is this director just pulling a scam on these rich people?"

reply

It's the exact opposite of pretentious mate. You're the one acting like you're above those who like it and casting aspersions against the director.

reply

Neither. He's just not interested in interesting or engaging cinema.
