Why call it 'Footy Legends'?

They are playing rugby, not AFL. Rugby is not 'footy'. Confusing for the majority of Australians that follow AFL.

reply

Sorry to burst your bubble mate, but north of the Victorian border, when someone says they are going to watch the footy, kick around a footy, or play footy they are referring to rugby league, not AFL.
So considering this movie is set in the outer suburbs of Sydney, it makes perfect sense to call it "footy legends". AFL doesn't have a mortgage on the term "footy".
Your post is so typical of a close minded Victorian.

reply

I'm from Brisbane.

reply

So, you're from Brisbane and still wonder why it's called 'Footy Legends?'

Too much sun, methinks.

reply

hah. that was actually kind of funny. callin him a victorian and he's from brisbane. lol.
Did any of you think that they call rugby, afl, and even soccer on occasions, footy?
just maybe.

reply

It isn't a rugby movie. "Rugby" refers to Rugby Union.
This is a rugby league movie. The 2 are very different, but very similar to the casual observer.
A Qlder should know that.

reply

Sorry koopz, i shouldn't have assumed you were a victorian. But the fact that you are a queenslander and wondered why the film is called "Footy Legends" just goes to show that you have your head rammed up your own ar$e further than i initially expected. And thanks to moppy_j for pointing out that no one who supports rugby league ever refers to it as "rugby".

reply

that isnt necassarily true.
i know heaps of league fans and they refere to it as rugby alot of the time.

reply

There are 4 types of football in Oz. Rugby league and union, AFL, and soccer.

Of these, rugby league and AFL are regularly referred to as 'footy'.

This is a rugby league movie and hence the word 'footy' is relevant.

Anyway, I'm going to see this movie tonight so it better be worth the hype.

reply

to me, as a born and bred Queensland that moved to Victoria
League=Rugby League
Rugby=Rugby Union
AFL=Footy (i just get used to everyone saying it. I called league football for ages and they were all like...WHAT?)
Soccer=Soccer

thats me anyway. I guess it depends on where ya hail from. The brits call soccer football. QLDers call league footy and Victorians cal AFL footy....Americans call the NFL footy probably...and so on and so forth

No they don't. I have played both codes at junior level, Rugby League is called "League."
"Rugby Union" is called "Rugby" or "Union."

Only Victorians call League "Rugby".

reply

Rugby isn't a sport to begin with, just some neckless thumpers pushing each other over trying to get to a line with ball. Least AFL has some skill required. Should add I was born in Perth (AFL city) grew up in Adelaide (AFL city) worked in Darwin and Hobart (both fanatical AFL cities) before moving to Brisbane in 2000 which is 50/50 AFL/Rugby. Never been to Sydney.
Just my 2.2 cents.

Also I did like the movie, the only complaint I had was the use of Hunters and Collectors music for the promos, that song is so thrashed its not funny.

reply

I havnt seen it yet but really want to. I'm in Sydney but am a big AFL supporter, coming from Adelaide. I used to agree with you about rugby but im starting to embrace it more now. And I have to say I LOVE Hunters and Collectors. Especially Holy Grail. One of the best things about watching the AFL is when they play that song lol. And because of that I associate it more with AFL than League (which i usually just call rugby)

Quite clearly Rugby Union is the best game

reply

Rugby Union is boring, elitist, private school tripe. AFL? I used to play a game like that when I was in primary school, it was called "force 'em back", everyone was bored of that by about Year 2.

reply

Anyone who thinks Rugby Union/ League isn't a sport needs to get out there and see what it's like. They can be a truly brutal games that tests every part of your body.

I can tell you, being underneath a rolling maul as 8 forwards wearing studded boots stomp on your head and body with no regard for your well being is about as challenging as you can get on a sports field. Getting up after that to play on gets respect, not only from your team but from the opposition. That is what sport is all about.

There are many skills required to play rugby, and unlike AFL, you need to be able to run, kick, tackle, catch (without dropping forward) and shove the opponent out of the way. The same goes for League. AFL is just kicking, running and catching. You can't tell me an AFL tackle is a tackle, it's a grab. That's kids stuff. And catching in AFL doesn't even need to be a catch, if you drop it you play on. It is the messiest game in the world. How it gets 90, 000 people into the G is beyond me.

Anyone who thinks the rugby codes are a game without skill is either American or a pansie.

reply

league are slow fat men?

let me tell you now, there are 100 kg plus player who run the hundred in ten seconds.

they are the closest thing to the full package in team sport as we know it

reply

This movie has bombed at the box office BTW, which isn't surprising considering how small the crowds at NRL games are

u are the dumbest idiot i have ever heard, telstra stadium can hold around 95,000 people can any afl stadium do that? i don't think so.
i'm guessing you live in victoria, where u prefer pussy sports such as GayFL, the biggest ever grand final in NRL history was in 1999 with Melbourne vs St George Illawarra, which had a capacity of 119,990 people. small crowds eh? no way.
2006, Year of the Dog

reply

Ah well another pointless sports debate. Can't really put down AFL though seen every state plays it (Tasmania wants in as well) and it draws much bigger crowds than Rugby. The AFL grand final had around 3 times the tv ratings the NRL game had.
After all its our national sport.

reply

I don't know about AFL being the national sport. It is "Australian Rules" and the only game with Australia in the title, but it is by no means as popular as soccer in England or baseball in America. The NRL is just as keenly followed in NSW and Queensland as the AFL is in Melbourne and Adelaide. I'm a league man myself, and I sometimes wonder what the inventors of Aussie Rules were snorting at the time of its conception, but both games have equal popularity and merits. As for this debate about the title "footy", the movie has Brett Kenny, Rod Wishart, Cliffy Lyons, Matthew Johns, Andrew Voss and Mario Fenech, all respectable AFL players (shyeah right). Anh Do and Mick Meridith (the guy in the sausage suit) have both done comedy bits on the NRL Footy Show and the movie is set in Sydney (when the play the qualifier in Kirribilli(SYDNEY SUBURB) you can kinda see a BIG WHOPPING ARCH BRIDGE in the background). If anyone needs to be told this movie isn't about AFL they need their head screwed on a bit tighter.

reply

I think you will find that the AFL follows only the NFL and German Bundesliga in crowd attendance at games. To claim that AFL and League have equal popularity in Australia is way off.

reply

Correct deck1. Rugby league is far more popular.

reply

Hahaha, this is a funny (and one sided) debate, although the league folk cant see that, because they play a ridiculous game of no skill where testosterone induced ****wits run at each other for 80 minutes. And the reason is simple, every state in Australia has an amatuer afl league, I think our amatuer RUGBY league has about 3 or 4 teams by now? Because no one goes to the games, no one wants to, because they would rather go and watch the local AFL team.. hurry up and go bankrupt NRL, so then we dont need to worry about your "sport" anymore..

Oh yeah and whoever said they played a game like AFL in year 2, I played a game like NRL.. its called 'British Bulldog'.

Oh and for the record, Victoria is the best state in the east coast :-)

reply

Come on? No skill?

I appreciate the athleticism of AFL players, but really, you don't even have to hold the ball. Talk about no skill.

You get points for MISSING a goal and you can make how many substitutions?

Please.

reply

AFL may be fun to play, but its one of the most boring sports around to watch...

and anyone who says footy (i.e. League) isnt a sport has DEFINITELY never played it, and would probably last about 10 seconds on the field.

sure, as a NSW born and bred i may be biased, but to say league men are all just thugs is ridiculous. these days they have to be super fit, built like a brick *beep* yet still able to keep moving at high levels of intensity for long periods.

in AFL you really only need to know how to run, and how to catch and kick.

you're not even allowed to tackle in AFL,...

reply

I thought that the film is called "Footy Legends" because they are all 'legendary' players of the game 'in their own minds'....it's an Australian concept(thanks Norman Gunston)

reply

You're not a Queenslander!!!

reply

More English speakers would know gridiron or soccer as "footy" than either rugby or Aussie rules (which is barely played outside Australia)

reply

Why are we even talking about *beep* American sports when this is completely australia based?

Australian Movie, Australian Sport, Australian Actors....

1. I'm an AFL Supporter, Saying the game is boring compared to the NRL is *beep* stupid, They are both good.

I am from South Australia, Both sports are good, No doubt the bigger sport is the AFL, But does it make NRL any less good? No, Both *beep* sports have proffessional Athletes, Who are the best at the sport they play.

Stop *beep* comparing the two, They are completely different sports, They are both good in their right mind, And everyone who is so ignorant in only liking the 1 are *beep* pathetic, They are the people who need to get their heads out of their own arses.

It's like comparing Lawn Bowls to Ten Pin bowling, Different crouds and different states like different things, None are better and None are more "fun" too watch, You obviously grew up on the 1 sport, If you're stupid enough to stay true to that and not open your mind too other sports and just like either then that's good for you, But always arguing over what sport is better is bloody pathetic, Jesus christ. they're both good.

By the way, Go the bombers! 6-0 Against Carlton! *And to you NRL supporters, Go you storm!*

Also, This movie was brilliant, I really enjoyed it.

reply

Well said even if you don't support the game it is still a good movie about family values and the underdog overcoming impossible odds. As for the footy debate when we say footy we are referring to rugby league (that just might be where i live) and you cant claim to be from brisbane if you didn't grow up there people who grow up in queensland hate afl as much as new south wales raised people and for them rugby league is footy and who cares about the use of the word footy or crowd sizes or states or the fact afl is only played in one country whereas league is played in about 5 and union about 12 and soccer every country. It doesn't matter its personal preference so stop starting troll wars just either watch the movie and enjoy it or shut the *beep* up!!!
p.s rugby refers to rugby union there is a very big difference between rugby union and rugby league its like calling aussie rules foursome backs or gaelic football.

reply

force 'em back!

reply

They are playing rugby, not AFL. Rugby is not 'footy'. Confusing for the majority of Australians that follow AFL.

That's an insult to the 'majority of Australians'. If anyone is confused about whether Australian Rules or Rugby League is being played, then I would dare say they deserve to remain confused.

It's apparent within 5 minutes of the movie starting that it's not about Australian Rules.
