The movie left me dwelling on the last few moments as well. I think the second to last sequence (Reyhan asking about renting the cafe across the street from Nasser's restaurant) was there to end on a note of promise or hope. And the last sequence was Nasser's reaction to being unable to control the outcome of things. Reacting to that powerlessness he makes sure his daughter knows that she and her brother are his to control and will continue to live under his will and his roof forever.

Realistically or not, I was thinking beyond the end of the movie... to her being able to successfully *rent* the other cafe. With Oujan running the public and business side, without Nasser's and Karim's interference, there would be no issues of property or inheritance to shut her down. And then, of course, she could go on to turn it into another success to rival Nasser's and take business away from him again!

All that hopeful thinking is my own but I feel like the possibility was left there deliberately. It was sad that she could not accept the love Zakario offered but at the same time heartening that she didn't give in and give up.

What a sad and wonderful movie.

I like your comments, webmaster.

Does anyone have any thoughts about why Reyhan did not accept Zakario's offer? And why she said, "I can't"?

reply

She barely knew him, they could not even communicate with each other because of the language barrier. I think the reason that she said 'I can't' is because she could not bring herself to enter into a situation where she was under the thumb of a man. After all the work she went through to maintain her independence, and her rejection of all the support and security that Nassar offered, she surely wouldn't bring herself to turning herself over to a different man; she simply wanted to be able to raise her children and maintain her independence and self-sufficiency.

i was so happy when he came to the restaurant but as the movie went on i was turned of by him.
i didnt like the fact that he still talked about his wife. and when those guys told him about what really happened to her, he didnt want to hear it.

i think that he just wanted to someone to replace his wife.

if anyone reading this its available on fandor too.

i got the impression that she really loved her husband and was still mourning. if i were her i wouldnt have wanted to go off with the first man that came along. she has kids and he is still married.

just my feeling.
