The name Sam-Soon

Does "Sam-Soon" mean anything specific or does it just sound like something else. I cant speak Korean, so I didnt catch why she doesnt like her name.

Sam in korean means 3, and Soon is a type of greeting for females. Her grandpa i think shouted the name Sam Soon when he first realised that they had a baby girl and this was their third daughter...so it can be almost translated to third daughter in a way but not really. Thats why it sounds so silly having a name like Sam Soon. I like it, i think its cute!!

So she doesn't like it cause it's so straight forward about the meaning. What does Hee-Jin mean?

Her sisters were named Il-Young and Yi-Young... What does Young mean? I personally think Sam-Soon is a pretty name.

What is a circumcision?
It's the latest craze. The ladies love it!
I'll take one.
I'll take two!

According to my Korean friend, Hee-jin (or Hijin, pronounced "Hedgin'") means "joyful truth".

plus her other sisters went in that order...

il (one)

ee (two)

sam (three)

which makes it a funny joke, because many korean parents actually give their kids very similar names

The reason Sam-soon doesn't like her name is because it is very old fashioned name. Like others said, it also implies that she is third daugher by using the word, 'Sam' that means three.
Here, 'Soon' is the word usually used in women's name, but mostly long time ago. Many women more than in their 50s have that word in their names.
Relatively, 'Heejin' is a modern style name that sounds prettier.
That's why 'Samsoon' wants to have that name. When it is called in Korean, Heejin doesn't have specific meaning.
Her sisters' names are 'Il-young' and 'Yi-young'. 'Il' means one, and 'Yi' means two. But 'Young' is a little more modern style than 'Soon'. That's why, in the drama, 'Samsoon' says she could have got married earlier, if her name were 'Sam-Young', not 'Sam-soon'.

How about when Jin-heon is called either Sam-Shik or Sam-Sik? What is the meaning behind this name?

I don't remember it being explained in the show, unless I missed it somewhere.

reply

It's just a male analogue of SamSoon -- a very plain and peasant-like name. Makes you think of a country bumpkin.
