Surely the museum would have had security cameras.....

..... which would have captured everything that went on in the museum?

I loved the film, but that thought popped into my head after it had finished.

Maturity. The very staple of the IMDb message boards.

You're trying to make sense of a movie where wax sculptures come to life every night?

the biggest thing people seem to forget, when posting about movies on forums like this one, is that its all just a story. it's pretend!!! it's not real, imaginary, if you like.
Get a grip people. it's like when your mum read you a bedtime story when you were little. sit back, relax, and enjoy being told a STORY.
I believe there are no bad films in the world. There are just stories which are told badly.

this.

Right, it's a story. But a thing about being a goo listener is being able to ask questions. The post shouldn't be criticised because it's a story about magic, if the OP wants an explanation given, he should get one. If you don't have an explanation, don't reply to it.

They didn't have security cameras or any high tech surveillance gear coz the Museum simply couldn't afford it ;)

It's a fantasy film, but it's inconceivable for a museum that big, with that much treasure in it, not to have more security than three dodgy old guys. I wonder why Larry didn't install cameras himself to score with Rebecca.

The golden tablet wouldbe worth 10s of thousands in scrap value of the gold alone.

This does seem like a major plothole, but then again it would ruin the fun it they had security to capture all of this and prevent the shenanigansSource:Movie Reviews - Night at the Museumhttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-for-night-at-the -museum

Instead of security cameras they could have simply insured everything there.

The valuable golden Egyptian tablet is the only plothole in this case. It's a museum of wax statues and replicas, there is nothing else worth stealing that can't be easily replaced. The only thing they have to worry about is somebody breaking in and vandalizing for which one night security guard is enough, but for..
They should have made the Egyptian tablet just another stone replica of the original, ordinary yet so exact to the last details that it actually had the same powers as the original, you know given it some mysterious origins. The old security guards trying to steal it would also make sense as they alone knew it's real value.
