Another 'coming-of-age' film?

Good film, but I'm starting to get a little concerned. Is it just my imagination, or is every third film these days focused on so-called 'coming of age'(COA)? I have a little conspiracy theory going: to wit, COA is a 'ready-made' theme that just needs to be filled in with a few twists and turns. It seems to me that it's just too easy to make films in this genre (i.e. pre-or-post-pubescent youngster finds him/herself in a pickle, goes through hell or hijinks to get out). There is a dearth of plots out there, and without the COA themes in place, I don't know how many films could be made.
