One of those self-consciously quirky films

yawn. who's with me?

I know what you mean but I didn't feel that way about this film, in a movie where we're dealing with the afterlife, I have seen many other films which try much harder to be surreal. The worst film I've seen in a while for 'trying to hard' to be 'Indie' and quirky has got to be It's a funny Kind of Story. Now that film tried too hard. It wasn't a bad movie, and it wasn't overly wierd (I happen to love weird films) it just seemed like a three year old jumping up and down waving it's arms at its parents shouting 'look mum! look at me! i'm an indie film!'

Wristcutters didn't do that, it didn't try to be anything it wasn't, there was a reason for every hint of strangeness and it played out very well, lovely little movie!

i'm with the opening post but i have to keep watching because a friend wants me to

I'm usually really sensitive to that "quirky" thing which has become so popular (thanks to Juno and Garden State mostly, I think), but this never hit that button for me. Which is a good thing. This went more down the Michel Gondry route.

I quite liked it. It was original enough, had good actors and wasn't pretentious. Anything that looked like it was about to verge onto Juno territory was swiftly cancelled out.

These bastards!

i don't even know what self-consciously quirky film means to be honest.

reply

It doesn't mean anything. It's just three words strung together because the OP thought it made him sound clever.

I was wondering the same thing.

Uhm,.....huh?

And,...I thoroughly enjoyed the heck out of this movie and it's in the list of my top faves, no doubt.

me

bit tired of these slight and offbeat American movies now. I can always tell when there's constant plinky-plonky background music in EVERY scene that not much interesting is going to happen and there;s going to be a fair bit of pondering. It's not awful it's just not that interesting and instantly forgettable. It's nice, and nice is a bit dull.

Pretty much my feelings about this too. It just kind of plods along until its over. Stuff happens, people say things, but none of it is that interesting. The low budget showed too unfortunately, usually they can kind of hide it on indie comedy stuff like this, but not here.

I wanted to like it, the writing and pacing just prevented me from doing so...

this movie was as straight forward as it could be. It was only quirky because of the subject matter and the type of story it was telling, But It definitely was not self consciously quirky.

you are wrong

I'd say it's veeery European in that sense, which makes sense since the writer/director is actually Croatian. That scene where they were arguing over who should sit in the back that cut straight to a drawn-out awkward shot of all three characters huddled in the front... That was the moment I internally gave up, even though proceeded to watch the whole thing so that I could rate it (I'll give it 3 - it was a mess)
