Virgin Suicides
Girl, Interrupted

Those movies don't have the same feel and atmosphere as this one. They deal with suicide, but have very different moods.

If you haven't seen Everything is Illuminated. It is similar in that it's a travel movie, the charecters grow and learn from one another, and it has a similar soundtrack. Highly recommend.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie with an atmosphere quite like this one. It's a very original movie :)

Everything is Illuminated---excellent suggestion!

reply

Alex, of Everything is Illumintated is the actual lead singer of Gogol Bordello (the band that Eugene from Wristcutters is "in")

Fun fact.

reply

and as a matter of fact, his name is Eugene Hutz

reply

I agree a thousand percent. Apart from "theme", all else is discordant with the merits of the film. I too would love to know any movies that convey the same tone as Wristcutters, if anyone knows of one.

reply

Everything is Illuminated was actually was actually what I was thinking too, even when was watching the movie. I think it popped into mind when Zia met Eugene's family and even more so when they started to road trip.

Delivering Milo!!!

I can't recommend it enough if you enjoyed this movie!!!

Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine. I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but they seem to give off the same mood/atmosphere. Love them both :P :)

reply

I couldn't make it through Little Miss Sunshine, but man Garden State is easily one of my favorite movies ever. It's like a chick flick for guys (almost)

Who was the ad wizard who came up with this one?

reply

Garden State, definitely. I thought of that movie while I was watching, in fact. In fact, a lot of road trip movies. Up to, and including, Road Trip. ;)

Like the person below me said,
Virgin Suicides is completely different from Wristcutters except, obviously, on one front. Well, & they were both based on a book (or novella).

The Virgin Suicides has an incredible atmosphere & soundtrack as well, but to me, TVS is so beautiful. Wristcutters' purgatory is purposely NOT beautiful. It'd be weird if it was. Visually, it's not a beautiful film, and The Virgin Suicides is. Sofia Coppola's movies always are. Also, suicide is treated a lot more seriously. Granted, Jeffrey Eugenides, the author of the book, did intend for their to be some humor in it, & there is. Such as,
"have we photosynthesized our breakfast today?"
& the gas mask party at the end of the movie & the teenager who flings himself in the pool screaming, "but I've got problems!" & making a joke about it. also a girl talking about how she put rat poison in a pie to kill herself, but her grandma ate it and some women, gossiping, referring to Cecilia Lisbon, "She didn't want to kill herself. She wanted out of that house. She wanted out of that decorating scheme."
but the boys, & the narrator, take it very seriously. no reference to the girls "offing themselves" ... it's always suicide, & the boys watch the girls from afar & spend the whole movie (& book) trying to make sense of something they will never understand. but there is no happy ending, b/c there are no easy answers, and sometimes there is no real specific reason that people kill themselves. i think a lot of people are as frustrated as the boys in the movie that they don't get a real answer as to why the girls all killed themselves. & that's why i love it. there are a million reasons why a person commits suicide... and i think, more often than not, there probably isn't a clear cut answer.

the virgin suicides is my favorite movie ever, & i argue with those who think the book is better. it doesn't explain any more than the movie, & the best quotes from the book are in the movie. I'm a visual person, so what more do you need?
so, obvs. the wristcutters didn't match up to that level for me, but i really enjoyed the movie .. esp. the smile at the end, b/c they couldn't do that in purgatory. i also believe that zia and mikal were in purgatory/coma together, & that he didn't make it up, not necessarily, b/c he was in a coma. he WAS there, for some time. i also love the end b/c i believe they recognized each other, & mikal was probably so relieved that zia came back as well. and they weren't able to SMILE where they were. it was certianly a more uplifting ending than TVS...

Chumscrubber is a much darker, more serious movie about suicide... a lot less comedy.... in fact, not much comedy at all....

Well. I believe I can. It might take some corn, some toast. I believe I can, for toast.

Beetlejuice, Tim Burton
Monkey Bone, Henry Selick
Toast, Corn
Corn, Toast.

The roadtrip element in this movie kind of reminded me of Motorama.
